Carlos Carrasco turned in his best outing of the season and the Mets bats came to life, resulting in a 10-1 win over the Cubs in Chicago Thursday night.

Staked to an early 1-0 lead, Carrasco served up a gopher ball to the second batter he faced. But that was the only run he would allow. While he loaded the bases in the third inning, he got out of that and near the end of his outing he retired 10 batters in a row. The Cubs are hardly the top offensive lineup in the league but it was still encouraging to see Carrasco with a good outing.

Meanwhile, every Met starter had at least one hit, even if it took a position player pitching in the ninth inning for Mark Canha to join the party. Brett Baty drove in the first two runs for the Mets, first with a sacrifice fly and later with an RBI single as part of a three-run third inning.

The Mets added another run in the fifth inning, thanks to aggressive baserunning from two unlikely sources. Jeff McNeil and Pete Alonso stole bases, with McNeil scoring on a throwing error. Two innings later, Alonso homered to the opposite field to make it 7-1.

In the eighth inning, Brandon Nimmo, who was robbed of an extra-base hit in the fourth, hit a two-run triple. Nimmo came home on an RBI by Francisco Lindor, on what was his first hit in the series.

In all, the Mets had 15 hits and four walks, a much-better showing compared to the first two games of the series where they sleepwalked mostly thru 18 innings. Next up is a trip to Denver to face the Rockies.

When he gave up the home run I got a little uneasy – the here we go again feeling. But Cookie threw a nice game pitching six – a quality start. Got to love Alvarez’s play. Scherzer, Verlander and hopefully the good version of Megill against the Rockies. How about a series win!

Gut Reaction: Marte’s two run single in the third inning was the turning of the game. Carrasco shaky start in the first three innings didn’t inspire confidence that four runs were enough to win. Carrasco settled down, the offense woke up and it resulted in a 10-1 win.
It is a shame that Vientos is rotting on the bench. He should be playing more instead a Vogelbach. If Eppler can’t find a trade partner then maybe he should swap Vientos with Mauricio until he finds one.
