It’s the theme of the moment – Mets pitchers pitched well enough to win but the offense just didn’t do enough. This time, the Mets fell, 3-2, to the Rockies Monday night at Citi Field.
In an effort to get more righties in the lineup, the Mets played James McCann at first base, despite McCann not playing the position since college. The first ball hit to him was a tough play, one where he dove and threw from his knees. But he got his man. McCann also hit a homer in the game. He had a chance to be the hero in the ninth inning but he struck out with the tying run on second base.
David Peterson started and gave the team six innings. Unfortunately, he allowed three runs in that span. Jacob Barnes pitched two and Yennsy Diaz pitched a scoreless ninth.
Brandon Drury pulled the Mets within a run in the ninth inning with a solo homer. Patrick Mazeika followed with a hit. The Mets did it backwards. They needed a bloop and a blast but they got the homer first.
Tough to win when you only get four hits.
Gut Reaction: Peterson pitched average according to MLB standards but the offense is sub standard. McCann, Lindor, Smith and even Villar are failing miserably. They have to step up to play as well in their immediate 2019 numbers. Otherwise it will be a long month.
Peterson just did not have his best stuff, so getting through 6 innings is a big plus. I have little doubt this guy will be a decent if not better ML pitcher, and these kinds of starts certainly create the cellular material he needs to lean on later.
Lindor is still the #1 problem. A team cannot expect much offense when the #2 hits .180 with no power. I also think it’s time to consider what we have with Dom… so little power and some awful at bats are unsustainable in the middle of the order. I love McCann going to 1B allowing Nido to play. Desperate times…
