The Braves scored 20 unanswered runs to rout the Mets, 20-2, Wednesday night in Atlanta.
In a game like this, typically you say – well, at least no one got hurt. But starter David Peterson left the game early and since it’s 2021, we should probably expect an IL stint. Either way, the blowout allowed the Mets to use Thomas Szapucki, although having him enter the game with runners on second and third probably isn’t the way the front office drew it up on the blackboard.
Szapucki got a comebacker from his first hitter and had the runner on third caught dead to rights. But for some reason, instead of running at the guy lost in no-man’s land, Szapucki instead turned and threw to first as the runner jogged home. It was that kind of night.
The rookie was in the unenviable spot of having to take one for the team. And take one he did, as he ended up with a final line of 3.2 IP and 6 ER. Walks had been an issue for him in the minors and he gave up 3 BB in his debut. He left with the bases loaded and Luis Rojas brought in Albert Almora to replace Szapucki. If possible, Almora looked even worse as a mop-up pitcher than a hitter, as he allowed all three inherited runners to score.
Pete Alonso gave the Mets the early lead with a two-run homer in the first inning. It was one of only four hits on the night for the Mets. Two came in the first inning and one came in the ninth. It’s a tough way to try and win a game.
It’s only one loss in the standings, luckily…
Gut Reaction: All (mora) pitchers failed in this game. Yes, it is only one loss in the standings but if Peterson is lost to the rotation then it will unlucky.
It’s funny that you and Gus are the first two to comment because my thoughts immediately turned to the game where we met Gus and the Mets got clobbered by the Nats, Syndergaard got hurt and Rendon homered 3X
Yet another thing Albert Almora can’t do.
Yes the pitching was atrocious. But the hitting…4 hits total vs. mediocre pitching and only 2 singles after the 4th batter of the game. Chili, are you still out there? Donnie Stevenson? Marv Thronberry? Anybody…please someone help these guys.

Well we got pounded beyond recognition and that rarely happens to good teams. In the standings it still looks like a split of two games and we won in a Morton start. Will Cohen take bold steps to remake this team before the deadline and before we need to make some important free agent decisions? Hope so. Caught the highlights of the Yankees loss from the wee hours of the morning and while we got killed, that loss was a back breaker for them. Can Jake rebound from his horrible last start?
I was surprised the Braves have been shifting when Luis Guillorme bats. He usually hits way more to the opposite field. Seemed to work, they must be emphasizing pitching him inside.
Maybe Jake’s most important start of the year (aren’t they all?). The team needs to hold off the Nats and hold their own in the Bronx. The All-Star break is badly needed. If the Mets still hold a clear lead, it gives them a chance to regroup offensively, move closer to Carrasco joining, to resting and rebooting Castro, to getting Stroman realigned, to squaring up the end of the rotation (I’m very disappointed in Peterson). Given all the team has suffered, we all have to feel pretty good that they are not seven games under .500 and looking up at the Phillies and Braves.
I’ve been browsing some of your rivals in the Mets’ Blogosphere, and heck, the posters there are so angry. I suggested to one of them to increase his fiber intake.
BTW, I just returned home after being on the road for a few weeks, trying to prove to myself that I’ve recovered from a serious injury. Riding 600 miles on a bicycle will do wonders for your confidence
