If three nights ago someone told you that the Giants were going to take two out of three from the Braves and the Cubs were going to sweep the Mets, you probably would have laughed at them. But that’s where we are as both of the top teams in the NL East are limping to the finish line. The Cubs completed the sweep with a 6-3 win Wednesday night at Citi Field.

David Peterson turned in his second poor outing, not even getting out of the first inning this time. He was bombed for five runs in a third of an inning. And given how much the offense is struggling now, it was pretty much over before the Mets even came to bat.

The offense was about as productive as you would imagine. They had eight hits but grounded into three double plays and went 0-3 with runners in scoring position.

Tomas Nido and Pete Alonso hit home runs.

It’s certainly stressful that we could have bolstered our lead instead we continue to cling to that half game. Pirates have won 4 straight ahead of this next 4 game series and the Phillies 5 in a row ahead of their 3 game matchup with the Braves. Again a chance to pick up some ground with Corasco, Walker, Bassitt and deGrom but only if we hit the ball. Pirates have the worst record in the NL while the Phillies hold the #2 wildcard spot but are not far ahead of the Padres and Brewers. These games are critical for them as well. Still think we need to see Dom Smith up instead of a one dimensional bench player and he certainly could not do worse than Vogelbach at the DH and could actual spell Alonso at 1B and move him to DH for a game. At least Pete has started hitting the ball but alas not with runners on.
Keeping my same optimistic outlook but would rather we not limp to the finish line as we seem to be doing. Hoping Max will be ready soon as well as Marte who has had a great season thus far. Time to “Buc” the trend and sweep the Pirates. LGM

Gut Reaction: Good teams when playing at home should not be swept by inferior teams. But it happens. The Pirates swept the Dodgers in California this year. That example doesn’t justify being swept by the Cubs but they shouldn’t panic either.
Peterson was non competitive. He slipped into his old ways of walking batters. The hitters are not producing. Instead of a clutch hits they hit into double plays. Marte is missed. They better right the ship because the Pirates are looming to steal their treasure. 3 of 4 is expected. LGM

Watched the game last night. The Mets hit weak grounders all game. Tough to watch.
