Mighty Morphin’ Mets Sweep Marlins From Miami
What a year it’s been Mets fans! Last night fans held their breath as Zack Wheeler tossed his third MLB game and won his first. Called up after the All-Star Break to replace the traded, Johan Santana, Wheeler struggled mightily against the Phillies giving up four runs in three innings but he improved in his no decision against the Nationals and last night finished the sweep with 6.2 IP and 13 strikeout outing, highlighted by several at-bats by Giancarlo Stanton that neither player will soon forget. In the first inning Stanton worked out an 8 pitch walk after driving a ball into the second deck of foul territory twice. He then struck out in the third chasing a fastball up the ladder on a 2-2 count. In the 6th inning with a runner on second Stanton flew out to Lucas Duda on the 8th pitch of his at-bat and his 21st pitch from Wheeler that night.
On the Met side, David Wright continues to heat up (going 3-for-5 with a double) and his average is up to .298 after dipping to .273 on June 26th. Wilmer Flores hit another home run (3) as he continues to dazzle the Met front office as he plays for the injured Daniel Murphy. Josh Edgin, Brandon Lyon and Bobby Parnell finished the game off with a 5th consecutive scoreless outing for the bullpen and the Mets are back in second place above the Braves.
The Baseball world is a little stunned since the Mets traded away Johan Santana and John Buck to the Tigers at the deadline for prospects but the combined efforts of Harvey, Marcum and the NL All-Star Jonathon Niese have made up for the departure of Santana. Daniel Murphy continues in his course of recovery but may not have a role to return to when he’s ready later this month. Wilmer Flores has emerged as a key player in the Met lineup which may slide Murphy into a bench role.
It’s worth noting that both Ike Davis and Lucas Duda contributed an RBI in last night’s game which leaves Duda with a one-RBI advantage over Davis for the team lead.
The Mets are currently leading the Wild-Card race by a half game over the Braves and trail the Nationals by five in the NL East. It’s a far cry better than any of the baseball pundits thought the 2013 Mets would be and the Mets might be looking at a playoff run sooner, rather than later.
lol. Boy, would that be something. Here’s to hoping your prophesying isn’t on the fritz. 🙂
Nothing I said is COMPLETELY out of the realm of possibilities.
Something that might make for an interesting article:
Trading Wilmer Flores for an outfielder.
I think I’ve read more than a few about that already. Once the season gets going I’ll probably outline a few names. Right now he’s an option for our future at 2B.
How is Duda still on the team? I figure if he’s driving in runs, some AL team would have traded for him to be a DH/1B already. Also, if Johan went to the Tigers I wonder if it would result in Brennan Bosch or Avisail Garcia coming back in the deal.
Sorry to nitpick. This was a fun read and I hope it can be a reality next August!
Duda might have been traded but this was my fantasy scenario and I traded the biggest financial burden.
Fun read. Certainly within the realm of possibilities, however small it is. Anyway, as long as we are in fantasy mode, how about shipping Duda to AL team for a legit OF prospect and in the meantime, Valdy and Den Dekker, and Neuiwehuis/Cowgil platoon (left to right) are getting the job done.
I was trying to not go off the deep-end with Lucas Duda stealing 48 bases and playing dynamite short stop.
From your computer to God’s ears 🙂
I don’t think that the Flying Spaghetti Monster has ears.
