AAA:
Travis d’Arnaud: 3 Games –In only 8 at bats he has 6 Runs scored, 3 hits (two of them doubles) 6 walks and a 2:1 BB:K ratio. All of that is good. MVP
Josh Satin: 4 Games – Through 17 at bats Satin is hitting .412 with a homer and a double. He’s striking out a bit more than usual but I expect that to change.
Andrew Brown: 4 Games – Brown has had 1# ABs and managed 3 doubles and 3 Walks while hitting .385 and driving in 7 RBI.
Wilmer Flores: 4 Games – Flores is doing what Flores does when he enters a new level. He’s hitting singles and walking. 4 Hits and 3 Walks in 14 at bats with a 3:1 BB:K ratio. Once comfortable he’ll see his power rise (along with his K’s).
Brian Bixler: 3 Games – Through 9 at bats he’s hit 1 double and 1 triple. Bixler is striking out too much but he’s also swiped two bags.
Reese Havens: 2 Games – In 4 ABs Havens has managed 2 singles and 2 Walks. It’s really nothing as he’s only had 4 at bats and 2 games but it’s still a good way to start the season.
Collin McHugh: 1 Game – 5.1 IP, 4 Hits, 1 ER, 1 BB and 7 K’s. That is an excellent line for a pitchers first outing and could mean that he’s bound for the MLB again sometime soon.
Gonzalez Germen: 2 Games (RP) – 3.2 IP, 1 Hit, 1 ER, 0 BB and 3 K’s. I don’t expect a lot out of Germen but he’s potentially angling for a middle relief role if he keeps this up.
Robert Carson: 2 Games (RP) – 2.2 IP, 1 Hit, 0 ER, 0 BB and 1 K. It’s early but looking at the AAA relievers he’s got the most upside.
Chris Schwinden: 1 Game – 5.2 IP, 5 Hits, 2 ER, 0 BB and 1 K. The K-rate is bad but the WHIP is good. I’d prefer if they were a little more even.
Zack Wheeler: 1 Game – 3.1 IP, 3 Hits, 2 ER, 3 BB and 3 K’s. Wheeler cannot walk that many batters in the PCL because the hitters will make him pay. He’s got plenty of time to find his feet.
AA:
Blake Forsythe: 2 Games – In 8 at bats to have 4 hits with 2 doubles and a triple is very promising.
Alonzo Harris: 4 Games – The good news is that Harris is hitting. 5 hits in 17 at bats with 2 doubles. The bad news is that he already has 5 K’s.
Josh Rodriguez: 4 Games – Rodriguez has 5 hits in 14 at bats with a HR and a 3:4 BB:K ratio.
Cory Vaughn: 3 Games – Only 2 hits and 1 a triple. Vaughn is streakier than most. Not “Hot” yet.
Rafael Montero: 1 Game – 5.2 IP, 2 Hits, 1 ER, 0 BB and 8 K’s. A GREAT first start. Love seeing pitchers without BB’s and love seing WHIPs under 1.000. MVP
Cory Mazzoni: 1 Game – 5.0 IP, 4 Hits, 1 R, 1 BB and 7 K’s. Nearly as good as Montero but his WHIP betrays that he was the runner up.
Chase Huchingson: 2 Games (RP) – 3.0 IP, 2 Hits, 0 ER, 0 BB and 3 K’s. Huchingson is one of four lefty RPs in a talented AA bullpen. It’s a good 1st week for him.
Adam Kolarek: 2 Games (RP) – 2.1 IP, 2 Hits, 0 ER, 0 BB and 0 K. Kolarek was good but we expect a 9.0 ish K/9 from him.
Jack Leathersich: 1 Game (RP) – 1.0 IP, 0 Hits, 0 ER, 2 BB and 2 K’s. Leathersich still manages an absurd K/9 but it worries me that his walk rate keeps rising as he gets to higher levels of the minors.
A+:
Cam Maron: 4 Games – Somebody must have told Maron that he had a future as d’Arnaud’s lefty half. He’s off to a scorching start with 6 Hits in 15 at bats and 3 doubles. He has no walks but only K’d once. MVP
T.J. Rivera: 3 Games – So… I liked Rivera’s numbers but he was rated a poor SS. What looks to be happening is Rivera is manning 3rd with Reynolds at short and Rodriguez moving (early) to 1st.
Matt Reynolds: 4 Games – Missed my top 20 by a hair. He’s a talented player but his only MLB future is if he can successfully switch from 3B to SS. If that sounds backwards to you, it did to me too. He’s comfortably hitting .333.
Aderlin Rodriguez: 4 Games – 14 at bats with only 1 hit and 3 K’s… enough said.
Domingo Tapia: 1 Game – 6.0 IP, 4 Hits, 0ER, 1 BB and 3 K’s. Notice the innings for his first outing? That’s darn impressive. Watch Tapia for fatigue, he seems to wear out as seasons wear on.
Jacob DeGrom: 1 Game – 6.0 IP, 5 Hits, 0 ER, 2 BB and 6 K’s. DeGrom might have an argument for the best pitching performance of the group fro week 1, but neither had a better week than Maron.
Noah Syndergaard: 1 Game – 4.0 IP, 3 Hits, 0 ER, 1 BB and 5 K’s. All things looked good for a stretching out start.
Hansel Robles: 1 Game – 3.1 IP, 5 Hits, 2 ER, 0 BB and 6 K’s. Robles left the game hurt but the injury is supposed to be mild. Those 2 ER were both solo HR’s.
T.J. Chism: 2 Games (RP) – 3.0 IP, 1 Hit, 0 ER, 0 BB and 4 K’s. Chism is the best RP of the A+ group and he should emerge as their closer before long.
Jim Fuller: 1 Game (RP) – 2.0 IP, 1 Hit, 0 ER, 1 BB and 3 K’s. Let’s just be happy that Fuller is healthy again.
Hamilton Bennett: 1 Game (RP) – 1.0 IP, 1 Hit, 0 ER, 0 BB and 2 K’s. A solid first outing.
A:
Jayce Boyd: 4 Games – Savannah is supposed to be rough on hitters… tell that to Boyd, Nimmo and Plawecki. Boyd has 8 hits in 14 at bats, 3 doubles and a 4:3 BB:K ratio. MVP
Brandon Nimmo: 4 Games – Nimmo has 17 at bats to make up his 8 hits with 1 double, 1 triple, 1 stolen base and 5 runs scored.
Kevin Plawecki: 4 Games – in 15 at bats Plawecki has 7 hits, 3 walks and the team’s only HR.
Jeffrey Glenn: 2 Games – It’s a small sample but two have 3 hits in 7 at bats with 2 doubles is always nice.
Phillip Evans: 4 Games – Another player who missed my top 20 by only a little. Evans is hitting .313 and already has a triple.
Gabriel Ynoa: 1 Game – 5.0 IP, 1 Hit, 0 ER, 1 BB and 6 K’s. Dude get’s results… can’t argue with results.
Rainy Lara: 1 Game – 6.0 IP, 2 Hits, 0 ER, 1 BB and 6 K’s. Has arguably the better start but I’m giving the edge to the WHIP.
Paul Sewald: 1 Game (RP) – 3.0 IP, 0 Hits, 0 ER, 0 BB and 5 K’s. A save the hard way and a great outing.
Hunter Carnevale: 2 Games(RP) – 2.2 IP, 1 Hit, 0 ER, 2 BB and 6 K’s. That K-rate is great but we want less walks per inning.
Steven Matz: 1 Game – 4.0 IP, 4 Hits, 2 ER, 2 BB and 6 K’s. Nothing bad for Matz as he stretches out for rotation work. He’s got a lot of good things to build from here.
David,
Great work, as usual.
Nice recap David. Collin McHugh needs another good start or two and he will be knocking on the door while Marcum stays disabled. If I were Collin I would pitch with a sense of urgency to establish myself in the majors because Montero and Mazzoni are only a few months behind. It is great to see all this young pitching.
McHugh is very much like Dillon Gee. He needs to not pitch after him.
