Mets Minors: Building from the bottom up – Cory Mazzoni

Cory Mazzoni:  When I look at Mazzoni’s minor league stats… nothing jumps out to me.  He has average stuff and gets average results.  I watched him this Spring and was left with a different impression.  In short, Mazzoni has made it to #12 on my rankings based largely on scouting potential and a few innings of spring training.

Scouting: At 6’1” 190 Lbs Mazzoni is SLIGHTLY under sized for a starter.  (But I’m 5’10” so who am I to judge)

Fastball: Mazzoni’s fastball falls into the mid-90s and he has a good grip on his command over the pitch.  He supposedly peaks out around 97 MPH.  The pitch is deemed “Flat” but if he can increase the natural sink a little it’s a clear PLUS pitch.

Secondary Pitches: The only noted offering besides the heater is a curveball which has good movement… 60% of the time.  He has a good separation in MPH from fastball to curveball so even when the Curve is flat he gets people out in front of the pitch.

ETA: Mazzoni is back in AA which surprised some.  He will need to get more success from secondary offerings in a hurry or he’s destined to be converted into a reliever… which might happen anyway.
