In reality, the Mets are probably still the 7th or 8th best team in the National League, but they’ve already collected 10 irrevocable wins, and the 4th, 5th, and 6th best teams in the NL aren’t exactly monsters. The NL Wild Cards will be won by two flawed teams that likely over-perform their actual abilities by a half dozen games or so. The Mets are already further down that path than anyone else, and while it’s easy to look at this roster and see a bunch of question marks, there really does appear to be enough here to make September interesting at Citi Field.

This piece, obviously, was written several days ago and now the Mets have 12 irrevocable wins. If they play .500 ball the rest of the season, they finish with 85 or 86 wins.

This is a great shot at those who think meaningless April wins. There’s a lot of teams who, in September, could’ve used a few April wins in the standings.
Coming into the season, everyone agreed that the Phillies were bad. My position was that the Braves were nearly as bad although many people thought they still held some kind of hex over us. Hopefully a win today and a sweep ends those thoughts. The potential big swing issue is if the Marlins are as poor as they appear to be. I think their offense will score runs but that pitching staff right now does not inspire confidence. If we can go 13-6 against each of those three teams, we can go 50-55 against the rest of the league and finish with 89 wins. a 10-2 start against those three NL East clubs puts us well on our way.
Gotta take it one game at a time and treat each team as a capable challenger (86 Mets were the exception).
That said, I’m underwhelmed by the Marlins and Nationals so far. Expected the former to compete for second with us and the latter to win a ton of games.
It’s going to be a great year!
My father came down to Nashville to help me move back east during ST he asked me “how are your mets looking this year” I said could be a fun year 85-90 wins. I may have underestimated.
Anyway dad text me last night “our mets gonna win tonight?” I guess the band wagon picked up a ride along. Mike is right got to take it one game at a time but still should be a fun year!!!
I’ll take a few more on the wagon if I get to see packed houses. I don’t care if it helps Freddy, I want that place loud.
