The Yankees took the rubber match of the series with a 6-4 win Sunday night. With the loss, the Mets’ record drops to 14-5.
- Jon Niese didn’t pitch great but it might have been better than it looked. He had a 73.7 GB% and the defense had four errors behind him. For the outing he had a 2.70 xFIP.
- Mets relief pitchers did the job. Erik Goeddel threw two scoreless innings with three strikeouts and Alex Torres added a scoreless frame. There may not be a relief transaction imminent but Goeddel has pitched well enough to stay if one were to be made soon. Four of his five outings have been good and the one that wasn’t, well, let’s just say it wasn’t managed as well as it could have been.
- Juan Lagares and Daniel Murphy each had two-hit games. Lagares now has a .397 BABIP and a .668 OPS. Murphy bounced back from going 0-for-9 the first two games of the series.
- Kevin Plawecki grounded out to end the game. He’s a Yankee Stadium home run away from a poor debut. But the key will be how he handles the pitching staff, not if he can post a higher OPS than Lagares.
I didn’t even get to watch this game and it was rough. I think Niese can bounce back from this, but this defense has got to get down to basics, and fix this ship.
No mention of four errors? Or the runner not knowing how many outs there are?
This loss is on the defense. A questionable start for Muno at DH, Michael Cuddyer looks overmatched right now, and the Yankees looked like they were a much better team. Other than Murphy’s two clutch run scoring doubles with two outs, the rest of the lineup stunk! Including Granderaon after his HR.
Go back and read again, the errors were mentioned.
You’re right, sorry Brian.
This may be a confession or just a realization, but tonight’s loss angered me in ways that I haven’t been angered about a Mets game in a long time. Maybe I had expectations that I haven’t had in a long time and to see the collection of mistakes clouded my judgment? Or, was it that I really wanted to beat the Yankees?
LOL, even the announcers were annoying me during the game. I might need to take tomorrow’s game off.
Losing two of three to the Yankees when we came in so hot was very frustrating. And the Mets certainly didn’t play well tonight so that didn’t make it any easier.
Only thing to do is get back on the horse tomorrow night in Miami.
Murphy missed sliding at 2nd—would have been safe…. he got in Flores way on double play ball that was botched… he is what he is.
He’s a 290 hitter with no situational feel for the game with the bat, his legs or his glove/defensive brain. It’s not only the Errors that cost you. There needs to be a new stat— BBP—Bad Baseball Play. He does a lot of those on both sides of the ball.
When you’re playing real games,,,when you’re trying to win… situatiuons find guys like Daniel Murphy. I’m a fan of what he Is…. but he’s not a Championship Mid Infielder.
Plawecki was attacked with Curveballs tonight—off balance all night—I think he’ll be ok.
Muno was a strange start—I’m a fan of using the whole bench and keeping them ready… so I guess there’s that.
Yes, weird to start Muno in that huge spot. ESPN, Yankees, etc. He’s on the team because he isn’t a prospect; he’s a guy you can sit and not worry that you are wasting him.
And yes, Eraff, that’s how I saw the Flores error on the DP. Murphy in the way, bad communication.
Those announcers made it unbearable.
What does it say about Muno’s defense that Murphy started at 2B?
And now we will hear all week about how the Yankees with courage and resolve step up to face every challenge to prove they are truly New York’s team and they do it the right way while the Mets proved they were merely beneficiaries of a bad division.
