The Mets are an organization known for their consistent failure, starting with the early 60s, again in the late 70s and early 80s, and most recently in the early 2010s. Yet another thing that the Mets are also known for is the loyalty of their fans: they will stick through pretty much anything, evidently. That being said, these fans can be some of the most irritating of professional sports fans. We (obviously I include myself in this group) are some of the most ridiculed and stubbornly resilient. So what do Mets fans say more than anything else? You’ve probably heard them before.
“Next year is our year”
This would be the classic phrase known by every Mets fan and every single one has said it at least thrice. From the days of the 60s every Metropolitan fan has expressed their disappointment with the current season and the inexplicable confidence of the next. Only twice have Mets fans been correct in their confidence for the next season and one of them was completely out of nowhere. Fans of this team always seem to have even a bit confidence every season. This might be the most common saying in all of sports, but it just seems that Mets fans rattle this phrase off.
“The plan”
Originally introduced by David Wright back in December of 2012, “the plan” has been the butt of many jokes said by Mets fans. Wright had no idea what he was getting into during his press conference when he said he “believed in the plan.” Mets fans have taken this saying and completely turned it around; instead of a positive outlook for the future, it is now used as a parody for every time something happens that is not in favor of the Mets. This is one of the more recent trends that has been started by Mets fans and is usually used against the management branch of the organization. Don’t look now, but thus far in 2015, “the plan” has been working fairly well.
“We’ve got to get him going”
This is probably the most infamous quote used by Terry Collins during his tenure in Queens. Collins always seems to have infatuations with sub-par players, and wants to play them more than they deserve. He has stated that players such as Ruben Tejada and Eric Young Jr. should be placed in the lineup in order to “get them going.” This has led nearly every Mets fan to ironically say this after they have a disagreement with a lineup choice. The interesting part about this philosophy is that Collins never seems interested in getting the important players going; players like Juan Lagares and Travis d’Arnaud were not his priority only a year ago.
“It wasn’t hit off of Kershaw”
This is one of the less-repeated quotes from the manager, but it still has a place in the hearts of die-hard fans. Last season, when Collins practically refused to play Wilmer Flores at shortstop as an experiment, Flores would occasionally get a big hit. Yet this failed to impress Collins. In fact, he once said that even though Flores hit a home run, “It was not as if he had done it off of Clayton Kershaw.” Obviously this is a ridiculous mindset and it has stunned fans. Regardless, this phrase is used as a joke when a player hits a home run and it fails to impress the manager.
Trade for Tulo
Trade for Castro
Got to get Tejada going
Got to get Granderson going
Got to get Mayberry going
Got to get Recker going
Don’t go near Tulo, the Wilpon’s will never pay the rest of Castro’s Contract,I think the Tejada ‘problem’ was created out of myth,I really don’t think he was a bad stop gap, what wasn’t really made public was whether he was a stopgap or a long-term solution,Mayberry is a LF/1B/PH with a Right-Handed bat that can counter against a Justin Wilson or Andrew Miller.Nah,I’m just joking.Mayberry’s a rest for whoever’s playing Left or if Duda hasn’t sat for a while & there’s a tough LHP on a day game after a night game.I think Anthony Recker aka AR is what he is now;a #2 with a competent bat.And real quick about Granderson,I thought they’d click when they brought Kevin Long in during the off-season because they clicked well in the Bronx.
If I had to give any one phrase I hear more than others, it would be “Why is Collins still the manager?”
“I don’t need therapy”
“Things look better than they look.”
“I don’t care what our record is, the Pythagorean value has us much closer to being an awesome team, and let me tell you about batted ball exit speeds.”
The “next year is our year” is always said haha! I feel that if the Mets win the World Series, there will still be fans saying that next year is our year.
