Oh what a difference a day makes! It was still a bit more of the Mets signature style though: all or nothing. And we certainly got all of it today. A huge 10-run fourth inning sealed the game early on, highlighted by a Wilmer Flores grand slam, the first for the team this year. And no one needed it more than Flores. As the entire team has been struggling over the previous five-game losing streak, it has been easy to point fingers at his deficiencies (your’s truly included). But credit must be given, the young man keeps going out there and plugging away. The slam was his team-leading sixth homer of the year, and his slugging percentage continues to rise, a nice indication of continued success in that regard. If his defense can settle down to adequate-levels of bad, he still has a future at shortstop.
But it was a good day all around. Every Mets hitter reached base, included Jacob deGrom who was 3-3 at the plate, and drove in the first run of the game for the Mets. Curtis Granderson and Kevin Plawecki joined Flores in going deep. deGrom also pitched six glorious innings of one-run ball, striking out six and walking one in a huge game the Mets desperately needed to win. Michael Cuddyer and Eric Campbell joined Granderson, deGrom and Flores in multtiple-hit performances. The Mets had 16 total hits in this game.
Is this the start of something good, or was is it more a vent of frustration? Maybe it was both. Either way, we’ll take it and like it.
I was there!!!! It really did happen! It was insane in the crowd even tho it rained lightly most of the night.
🙂 your trip was worth it!
The offense was great.
But It was also nice to see JDG back and fun to see two more scoreless innings from Goeddel. Hopefully he’ll earn some higher leverage outings moving forward.
[When Collins was asked why his leading power hitter was batting ninth, he responded, ”I don’t worry about the home runs.”
”It’s not like he’s Giancarlo Stanton,” the manager said. ”He’s got power, and he’s hit five homers, but if you want to pitch around him to pitch to Curtis Granderson, I’ll take that.”
“If he had 11 home runs and was hitting .285 right now, there would not even be a discussion,” Collins said. “He’d be driving in a lot of runs.”
Flores doesn’t have 11 home runs, but his five homers actually give him the team lead. He isn’t driving in a lot of runs (11 in 31 games), but no one in the Mets lineup is.]
This was from ESPN and MMO. I have no comment on this.
The power of the Fedora!!!!!
You know TC is going to keep batting the pitcher in the 8 hole now.
If that is the plan going forward then Lagares with his .289 OBP and .612 OPS is the perfect candidate for the 9th spot.
Why not just bat Lagares first and leave the pitcher in the ninth spot?
Norme, if one hitter in front of Granderson is the plan, why not have two? LOL! How about letting your #8 hitter get on base and let the pitcher bunt him over? smh
