Ruben Tejada did his best to play the hero on Saturday, but had to settle for that honor on Sunday, as he drove in Juan Lagares from second base in the bottom of the seventh inning to put the Mets ahead for good, in what turned out to be a back and forth affair. The weekend series did not go according to plan as the Mets have been demolishing NL East opponents for the most part this season, especially at home. The Marlins would have none of that though, as mediocre pitching from the Mets staff certainly didn’t help the past two days. Bartolo Colon kept the Fish in check for the most part, and helped his own cause with an RBI double in the bottom of the second inning.

Wilmer Flores hit another home run, but still has an OPS under .600 in his previous 10 games. Meanwhile John Mayberry, Jr. continues his struggle to provide any offense whatsoever. The Mets should have been able to sweep this team, or at least take two of three. But with so many injuries and a rotation that is taking some lumps lately, wins are hard to come by. There’s no rest for the weary, as the team must travel to sunny San Diego tomorrow for a West Coast trip that could hopefully go very well, and start the month of June off on the right foot.

Didn’t get to see it as there was some work to be done, but three things:
    1. Saw this two times on the highlights. Two outs in the seventh inning, Tejada up, Lagares at second and Granny on first. Tejada hits a fly ball that lands on the warning track, bounced once and Yelich was there to grab it. Yelich overthrows the first cutoff man, but Gordon is there to be a backup. Granny cruised towards second, then turns it on once it bounces, but Tuefel holds him up at third. Darling was gushing how Granny read it all the way but Tuefel held him up because Duda was coming up, but really Ronnie? With two outs what is there to read?
    How can:
    A. Granny not score with two outs on a double off the wall?
    B. Tuefel hold him up, whether Duda was coming up or Ted Williams?

    2. Alex Castellanos is having a decent year at Vegas. He has some pop, plays outfield (we’re watching you Mayberry and Cecilliani) and he plays 3B quite often. What are we waiting for?

    3. I believe Recker should play every day until TDA is activated. He is decent defensively and may win you a game once a week from the #8 spot with his power. How many players like that do we have?

All good points, Gus. While I would not say that Recker should play everyday, he should be given the opportunity to get some consistent swings. OBP & SLG he’s easily outperformed Plawecki, no reason for him to be buried.

Love watching Colon on the base paths almost as much as at the plate.
