The Mets salvaged the final game of the series against the Cardinals with a wacky 3-1 extra-innings win Sunday afternoon in a game that lasted nearly six hours and saw the Mets have 25 LOB, which tied a team record.
- One inning after being unable to cash with the bases loaded, the Mets again packed the bases and scored on a SF by Ruben Tejada and a perfectly executed suicide squeeze by Eric Campbell. Carlos Torres picked up the win with two scoreless innings.
- It looked like the Mets were going to win in the 13th. Curtis Granderson started the inning with a hustle double and scored on an RBI single by Kevin Plawecki. That hit broke an 0-for-15 stretch with runners in scoring position. But Jeurys Familia could not convert the save, as he allowed a homer to Kolten Wong.
- Jon Niese started and gave just what the Mets needed after Bartolo Colon‘s poor outing yesterday. Niese went 7.2 scoreless innings. He now has made 31 straight starts and has a 2.28 ERA over his last eight games. But, he’s an injury risk, you know?
- Both Bobby Parnell (1.1) and Jenrry Mejia (2.0) pitched well. It’s nice to have those guys back in the fold, especially after what we watched the Torres boys do Saturday. Hansel Robles contributed a scoreless inning and Sean Gilmartin added three scoreless innings.
- The Mets ran their record in extra inning games to 5-2.
I actually watched the last 14 innings of this game.I almost pulled all my hair out.
I thought they would take 1 in St Louis but didn’t expect it in that fashion. This team has exceptional pitching. This team has a deplorable offense. Sandy, I will walk your dog for you if you will just get on the phone.
Familia is human and I can’t complain on a 90% save rate. Granderson attempted to *will* this important win with his hustle double, all out sprint on Plawecki’s hit, and the lead runner on Campbells suicide squeeze. He is a gamer with a winning attitude and can play on my team anytime. The other veteran who may not be that talented but has the proper approach is Tejada. He battles offensively even though he does not have the tools. If he is our shortstop until the end this year then I can at least know he is giving all of his limited ability. Lucas has got to wake up.Why is Lagares, with his speed, constantly popping up to the infield? Why is the majority of Met at bats seem to be pop outs,
The Nats lost today and we are only two games back with our best three pitchers scheduled and the opportunity to come home to Citi Field in first place. Oh,did I mention that I would walk Sandy’s dog if he would just get on the phone? Oh,I guess I did.
What a game. Maybe they can use the confidence of winning to win a few in Washington.
Someone that does not handle the pitching needs to be fired after that atrocious display of baseball.
I don’t understand how Jon Niese does not have trade value. 31 consecutive starts and 2.28 ERA over the last 8 games. He is a number 3 starter on any team in majors. Contenders should be salivating on the opportunity to trade for Niese, who need that extra arm down the stretch. Yes, I get it he’s not Cueto, Hamels or Kazmir. I hope the competitive southpaw finds a new home because we desperately need a bat. On a side note, this game was absolutely miserable…..Terry I don’t get why you didn’t bunt with Flores…would have set up Plawecki with the bases loaded. Duda is dead…his true colors have been exposed while not having any protection. Duda needs to be sandwiched in between a big bat and perhaps David Wright if he’s alive. I really like Gomez, I am certain the Brewers don’t want Niese but I would trade Nimmo, Montero and another for him (hopefully not conforto)….but honestly how many good prospects can you have….I would add conforto to make this deal in a heart beat. End rant.
