In perhaps the most disappointing game of the year, the Mets lost a 7-1 lead and fell to the Padres, 8-7, in a game where the rain played a big part.

  • It looked like the Mets were going to escape with a 7-5 lead. Bobby Parnell and Hansel Robles gave back four runs in the seventh inning but Tyler Clippard restored order in the 8th. Jeurys Familia came on and then the rains came. Familia got two outs in three pitches and then, in something I’ve never ever seen before, the umpires called for a rain delay with two outs in the ninth. When play resumed 45 minutes later, Familia didn’t have it, gave up three runs and then the umpires again called for the tarp. Three hours later, the Mets had a revolting loss.
  • Jon Niese had a nice bounceback game after getting knocked around in his last outing in what Gary Cohen referred to as his paternity game. He cruised through the first five innings, had some trouble in the sixth but escaped after allowing just one run. Niese sacrificed in the bottom of the sixth but was not brought out despite throwing just 87 pitches.
  • Curtis Granderson had a super game. He contributed a three-run homer and made three fine catches, two of which came in the eighth inning.
  • Juan Uribe also homered.

In retrospect it would be easy to say that Niese should have been allowed to continue. But who could have predicted that the bullpen would screw it up?

One can’t blame the umps for the delay in the top of the ninth. On TV it appeared to be an unplayable and dangerous situation.

This was a difficult loss to swallow.

A terrible, terrible loss for a team looking to make the playoffs against a team that we were mocking half-way through the game, and blowing out.

That, coupled with the Astros trading for the same Carlos Gomez that just last night we deemed unhealthy leaves me a bit dazed. While I am glad to keep Flores and Wheels, I know the Astros are well run and ask myself “why would the Astros do it just 24 hours later?” It had to be financial. My friends, let us say in unison: “Houston, We have a problem. Good luck to y’all.”

I had to go out and did not know Familia had 2 outs before the delay with no runs allowed. That just makes it worse.Damn.

The last 24 hours has been an emotional roller coaster for the Mets. A Colon meltdown followed by a blockbuster trade followed by a cancelled trade followed by a 7-1 lead followed by a rain delay followed by a Wicked Witch of the West type meltdown, water and all by Familia and tonight Jay Bruce rumors.
Regroup, three big ones with our three best starters going. A sweep and we are in first place on Sunday or two out of three makes up ground. Those are the only acceptable options as the calendar turns to August.

I put this one on Terry. Shouldn’t have pulled Niese so soon, shouldn’t have put Familia back out there after the rain delay.
