The Mets jumped out to an eight-run lead but had to sweat out the ninth inning before earning their second consecutive sweep with an 8-6 win over the Marlins Wednesday night in Miami.
- Matt Harvey shook off concerns about struggles versus the Marlins with another dominating effort. He allowed just two hits and no walks in seven innings en route to his 10th win of the season. In his last nine games, Harvey has a 1.64 ERA.
- The Mets pounded out 12 hits, including three-hit games by both Daniel Murphy and Ruben Tejada. Lucas Duda and Juan Uribe each drove in three runs, with Uribe delivering all of his on a homer.
- The Eric O’Flaherty experience got off to a rousing start, as he allowed four runs and gave up three hits to lefties in his two-thirds inning of work. Hansel Robles threw some gas on the fire, allowing both of his inherited runners to score and necessitating an appearance by Jeurys Familia, who picked up his 29th save.
- The Mets have scored 67 runs in their last 11 games
That 9th inning got turn-down-the-volume, clutch-a-pillow scary. Did not see that coming…
But meanwhile, Dbacks are up 8-2 on the Nats heading into their 9th inning. On the verge of a two-game lead…
I was getting that sinking 2007/2008 feeling in the 9th. That’s how my guts were reacting…
Meanwhile, the Nationals have that ’07/’08 look themselves right now…
hansel Robles.. Hansel Robles….
4.35 ERA. terrible
45% inherited runners scoring (league average is 27%) also terrible.
All with a .253 BABIP…
Why the hell does TC trust this guy in the late innings! He doesn’t even belong in the majors in my book.
Robles ….. Gotta go.
Mets could consider bringing Gee back up in a relief role but I guess there are 40 man roster issues.
To quote Brian in the Chatter, “Offense is Fun ! ” and it was very necessary last night.
Oh-Oh O’Flaherty, our new LOOGY, gave up three hits to lefties and nearly let the game get away. I didn’t like the acquisition or the pitching concept (LOOGY).. Robles should take Alex Torres spot as the pitcher to pitch when losing by a lot. He is too inconsistent to be relied on. Verritt was doing a nice job while he was up and should replace Robles.
Conforto should remain up when Cuddyer gets activated. The pennant race and winning atmosphere will have a bigger impact on his development than some extra AAA at bats.
At this point in the season, the Mets should be striving to put the best 25 men on the active roster.
Harvey was awesome. Two games in front in the standings. Six game winning streak. LGM
Here’s a crazy thought: Matz returns, Niece heads to the bullpen, to give the team two inning stints as a bridge to Familia. He won’t be able to do it on consecutive nights of course, but I have to believe he would be an improvement over the Robles and O’Flaherty, at least at this stage in O’Flaherty’s recovery.
Maybe Niece is one of those guys with an especially long recovery time, which would be news to me. Otherwise, why not?
Because you don’t place people in sub-optimal roles. When Matz comes back, Niese is still one of the best five pitchers on the team.
It’s a point of view, but I greatly doubt it.
deGrom, Harvey, Matz, Syndergaard and … who if not Niese?
I’m here and ready to explode if he says the “C” word.
How much better does Niese have to be to remain in the rotation?
“Here’s a crazy thought…”
Not just crazy, but stupid as well! (for the reasons already listed above)
While we all tried to figure out what the heck we need another lefty for, the other shoe drops: Blevins is having surgery on a refracture of his arm.
I don’t ever remember in all my years cheering for this team to have seen such an amount of injuries. Would love to know how the amount of DL days compare with the record.
