The Mets finished off their four-game sweep of the Rockies with a 12-3 win Thursday afternoon at Citi Field. It was the 11th sweep of the year for the Mets and second of a four-game set. New York is now 63-52, the first time all season its been 11 games over .500.
- Nine of the Mets’ 12 hits went for extra bases, including three homers. Kelly Johnson led the way with a homer, two doubles and three RBIs. Curtis Granderson and Juan Lagares also homered and drove in three, with Lagares’ all coming on a pinch-hit blast.
- Michael Conforto had a good game, going 2-for-3 with a double, a walk and three runs scored. He’s striking out more than you’d like but now that he’s out of the Trop, he looks fine in the field and looks very comfortable in the box.
- Noah Syndergaard recovered from a rocky first inning, in which he allowed two solo homers, to settle down and pitch marvelously the rest of the way. He probably should have come out after six innings, given how little work the majority of the pen has seen lately, but no one could be too upset after he finished the outing with a five-pitch inning. He ended the day with 7 IP, 3 ER, 2 BB and 5 Ks.
- The Mets have scored 67 runs in 12 August games for an average of 5.6 runs per game. Contrast that with the Nationals, who have scored 20 fewer runs in the same 12 games for an average of 3.9 rpg.
Clearly a getaway day for the Rockies. They could not get out of town fast enough. Walt Weiss better watch it or this team might get him fired. It looks like they’ve quit. A talented club but wow, no pitching. Got to be disheartening.
It stinks to be a Rockies fan right now, and probably for the next 5-6 years. Their biggest problem has been trying to develop overpowering flamethrowers to pitch at Coors Field. They should be focused on getting sinker ballers who pitch down in the zone, get ground outs, and pitch very well on the road. It’s why Aaron Cook, Jorge De la Rosa, and Jason Marquis have had success there. Will they ever learn? Hopefully some day.
The good news is that the Broncos are still a force in the NFL.
So much fun right now. LGM!
So many pieces that fit together to form such a cohesive unit. There is depth so that TC doesn’t have to run any player into the ground as he was prone to do. He has starting pitchers giving the team seven solid innings reducing the bullpen to a set up man and closer. They could even consider an 11 man pitching staff if this keeps up. Hopefully in a week or two the Captain will be back and contribute.
First place, four up in the standings and a ton of pressure on the Nationals to win tonight. Two out of three against the Bucs is now expected as this team has gelled so much these past two weeks. Let’s Go Mets !
“The Mets have four No. 1s,” Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado said. “We saw all four of them.”
“The Mets have one No. 10” Name said. “Fatty should be Released and deported”
Hahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahha!
