Logan Verrett made quite the splash in his first Major League start. He held the Colorado Rockies to just four hits over eight innings, striking out eight and walking just one. The only blemish against his fantastic day was a solo home run from Carlos Gonzalez in the fourth inning. And the Mets needed the magnificent start, as the bullpen was tasked with providing nine innings of relief the past two games. The start saved innings on the relievers, and Matt Harvey who sat out for scheduled rest on Sunday.
Meanwhile the Mets offense continued to pound the Rockies’ starters. This time David Hale was the victim of five early Met runs, two via his two wild pitches in the second inning. Michael Conforto had his fourth multi-hit performance in just 17 starts. He looks to be everything the Mets were hoping for, and could be a critical element in September.
Verrett was the star today, though. His excellent effort not only gives the Mets options to spot start for Jacob deGrom or Noah Syndergaard, but if Bartolo Colon continues to struggle, he might even be able to take over the fifth role in the rotation. These are all conversations for another day, as it’s just nice to enjoy yet another sweep of the hapless Rockies. The Mets return to the East Coast tomorrow and welcome back Captain David Wright for the first time since mid-April.
The announcers talk about how Conforto seems to be living a charmed life. And you know what – good. The Mets should be looking for reasons to get him in the lineup, not reasons to send him packing.
If there was any justice, Verrett would remain in the rotation, Harvey would pitch in a couple of days when it’s Colon’s start and the veteran would be sent to the DL.
Alvarez sent back. verrett staying.
Verret was very impressive.
Verrett was so impressive that he is being kept on the roster and is being considered for the 7th inning job.
Matz is due back soon and should also be on the playoff roster to replace O’Flaherty. Verrett and Matz will certainly improve the playoff bullpen.
Colon’s collapse is making it easier to remove him from the rotation.
Comforto is getting eased into the majors without the burden of being the team’s savior. The team has jelled nicely.
