Something different with the Gut Reaction today. This is what I had written in the 8th inning.

The Mets’ six-game winning streak came to a halt with a 7-4 loss to the Braves Sunday afternoon. The loss prevented a four-game sweep, something the Mets have never done in Atlanta.

  • The Mets were done in by some poor defense. Juan Uribe failed to turn a DP, which led to one run for the Braves. Later, Tim Stauffer with a runner on third coming to the plate, opted to go for two instead of getting the runner at home. And finally, Curtis Granderson went to make a sliding catch on a ball he could have handled normally and over-slid the ball, leading to two runs.
  • Manager Terry Collins opted to rest Yoenis Cespedes, Travis d’Arnaud and David Wright.
  • There were also some odd pitching choices. With a 4-3 lead going to the bottom of the seventh, Collins called on Stauffer to make his Mets debut. Then in the eighth, he brought in Dario Alvarez and Bobby Parnell. Meanwhile, Sean Gilmartin hasn’t pitched since 9/4.
  • Michael Conforto had a two-run homer and a walk. He now has a .911 OPS

But it wasn’t over. Juan Lagares hit a two-out double in the 9th. Granderson followed with a walk and Daniel Murphy tied it with a three-run blast. Amazingly, Parnell retired the side in order in the ninth. The Mets came on with another two-out rally in the 10th.

Kevin Plawecki hit a grounder which should have ended the inning but a wild throw to second allowed the go-ahead run to score. The Mets tacked on two more thanks to walks.

Addison Reed came on to record his first save as a Met.

This was the Mets’ 15th comeback win since August 1 and cut the team’s magic number to 11. The Mets are now 10-6 against the Braves this year and are 37-37 in road games.

The Mets did not deserve that win. Not at all. However good teams always find a way to win, and this team is good. I’ve followed this team since Endy Chavez made his great catch, and so far there has been little to cheer for. Now? The new kings of New York baseball reside in Queens.

Totally unrelated, but i just noticed that the Mets schedule for next year is up and it’s pretty weird

2 game interleague series against the Royals to lead things off. Potential World Series rematch to start the year?
No Thursday baseball in April? Never seen that before.
We don’t see the Nats until mid-May as well.

Let me tell you what I saw:

    1. In the eighth inning, with first and third and no one out, Stauffer fields a grounder back to him and allows the go ahead run to score in the 8th! inning in order to get a double play. I understand that he’s a starting pitcher and he isn’t in the game most eighth innings, but are you kidding me? Keith Hernandez could not understand it, but it’s by the book defense. But, in the bottom of the eighth you don’t look to cut off the go ahead run?

    2. Gilmartin hasn’t pitched in a week and a half, with no explanation, but Stauffer who just came up on Thursday pitched 1.1 innings? Would have liked to see Plawecki in there yesterday so TDA can play today and not have Wright, Cespedes, and TDA out of the lineup at the same time. But in Collins’ “worry only today’s game” world, there is never any planning ahead.

    3. Murphy’s bomb and his three run shot to tie the game in Miami in the 9th off Cishek have to be the most clutch homers I can remember from him.

I’m very happy for the Mets and love winning as much as anyone. However, the Mets are leading a charmed life where no matter how hard they try to screw it up, they can’t. That worries me becaus, when luck will turn as it inevitable will, will they be able to make the correct plays that lead to winning?

Correction on the Stauffer play, it was in the seventh and it was the tying run. Not quite as bad a play as I thought; got my innings confused.the tying run in the seventh is more understandable.

As an aside, we had the p,ensure of meeting some of Kevin Plawecki’s family before the game. Totally cool and very nice. They were super excited for home to get a start today.

Met fans really outdid Braves fans. We tortured Braves fans with endless Lets go mets, particularly in the 8th and onward. The sound of the ball off Conforto and Murphys HR was incredible. That 9th and 10th innings were beyond words. Sure the Braves pen is bad, but to fight back from 0-2 2 out was awesome. Braves fans were standing and sliding some crap, but to watch the team fail, and the fans melt was priceless. No Mets fan left 3 runs down, but Braves fans fled after the 9th.

      Gut Reaction: Remarkable

Chris F 》 so glad that you saw these two games !

How cool to be there for that. I lived in Atlanta for a couple of years and could not stand the typical Braves fan. Arrive late, leave early. Stand when the scoreboard tells you to stand. Do the chop when told. This was during their golden run.

They piped in the chant back then. I wonder if they still do that given what happened across town to the Falcons.

      • Chris F

Oh yeah the chant and the chop are all manufactured by the PA system.the second it turned off, all the lemmings stopped chopping, and chanting. Meanwhile Mets fans were spontaneously breaking out into boisterous Lets Go Mets chants and cheering like mad. Tip of the cap to Lagares for hanging in there when it was 2 strikes and 2 outs. He stung that double. After the game, the bowels of Turner field were filled with more Mets fans high-fiving and screaming Lets go Mets!

The come back was so amazing, that most people didnt even talk about this being a winning season after yesterdays victory, or that it was the official elimination of the Marlins. Also, first four game sweep of Braves in ATL since the 80s. Monumental win.
