Well, at least Washington lost. The Mets could not solve Matt Wisler as all the offense came in the first inning and Logan Verrett fed his gopher.
It looked like the Mets would drive Wisler to the clubhouse early as the first three batters all hit the ball hard: Curtis Granderson flied out to center, David Wright homered to right center and Daniel Murphy rapped a double off the wall. That was it, though.
For his part, Verrett cruised through the first four innings before surrendering a pair of homers in the fifth: a solo shot by Jace Peterson and a two-out, three-run shot by Hector Olivera. The Mets had a chance to tie it in the eighth, loading the bases with one out. Michael Cuddyer hit a sacrifice fly, but Wilmer Flores grounded out to douse the threat. The suddenly vulnerable Tyler Clippard gave up another two runs in the bottom half.
The offense has gone anemic at the worst possible time. Luckily for the Mets, the Nationals are being cooperative. The magic number is down to six.
puke.
+1
I don’t like what I’m seeing from the offense, but trying to stay optimistic.
Beware the campaign that peaks too early! I think Sophocles said that.
The Mets still have a little time to get hot again. I rather hope it happens, or we all will have to find other things to occupy us for most of October.
First Place, 6 1/2 game lead, with a Magic # of 6. I’ll take it .
The first losing homestand of the season, that I won’t take.
This last homestand should have gone 6-3 and at the least 5-4.
This is not the time to be losing a series because in two weeks the Mets will be playing a five game series that they must win to advance. It is time to win today and then take 3 in Cincy. It is time to recapture the winning ways. I am 100% confident of winning the division but I want to get some momentum going to the playoffs. LGM
