The Mets had a lead late but could not hold it and complete the sweep, as the Phillies rallied for a 5-4 win in extra innings Wednesday night in a game that passed the four-hour mark.
- The bottom of the 11th will never make the “How to play better baseball” video. A wild pitch but runners on second and third with one out and the Mets started to intentionally walk the batter. But Terry Collins and Dan Warthen were madly screaming from the bench and after giving away a ball, Hansel Robles then came back to face the batter. He got a shallow pop to keep the game alive but not before the Phillies almost won on a well-hidden squeeze play. Philadelphia finally claimed the victory on a hot shot that David Wright fielded but was unable to throw out the speedy Peter Bourjos.
- It was a tough game to watch with neither starting pitcher coming anything close to crisp innings early. Bartolo Colon finally settled down and enjoyed his best two innings in the fifth and sixth but was removed after just 90 pitches with a 4-3 lead.
- Jerry Blevins came on in the seventh and retired the RHB but gave up a double to the lefty. With another righty up, Collins called on Addison Reed, who gave up a single which tied the game.
- The Mets banged out 14 hits in the game, including back-to-back homers by Yoenis Cespedes and Lucas Duda.
- A botched defensive play helped lead to a run for the Phillies in the fourth inning. With runners on first and second, Colon induced a tailor-made DP ball. But Neil Walker bobbled the ball that was hit right to him and only got one out on the play. Next batter up hit a sac fly to give Philadelphia a 3-2 lead.
- Wright and Michael Conforto combined to go 0-11 with seven strikeouts. The Mets fanned 17 times in the game.
- After an off day Thursday, the Mets travel to Atlanta for a three-game set with the Braves.
This was a tough loss. Granderson led off the 11th with a walk and through hustle and his strong desire to win advanced to second on a fly ball to deep centerfield. Granderson is a real pro.Unfortunately Conforto and Cespedes could not put the ball In play as each one struck out. It was the ideal situation to have your 3 And 4 batter up with the go ahead run at second against an inferior opponent. These are the games that a pennant winner wins. They failed the test last night and fell back to
500. Let’ s get 2 of 3 In Atlanta.
Way off topic, but I’d like to share this article. Only read the first half so far, but a fun read; interesting for those of us that love baseball and how others use that love:
