It was a historic night for the Mets in their 13-1 win in their series opener against the Giants at Citi Field. It was their seventh win in a row and put them at 14-7 for the season.
- The obvious highlight here was the 12-run third inning. It was the craziest thing. The 12 runs were the most the Mets, as a franchise, have ever scored in a single inning in their history. It was capped by a Yoenis Cespedes grand slam, on another first pitch no less, that just made the entire experience surreal. Honestly, who didn’t see that one coming as soon as he stepped to the plate?
- Steven Matz started this one for the Amazins. He started off a bit rough, unable to get his pitches down in the zone early. He went six innings, however, with four strikeouts and no runs. That early, unsightly ERA has now dropped to 3.86.
- Kevin Plawecki started for the injured Travis d’Arnaud, whom we can officially label injury prone (if you hadn’t already). He went 1-3 with a strikeout and a walk. The highlight here is his participation in a “strike em out throw em out” double play in the second inning.
- The team was 9-16 with RISP, something they’ve struggled with early. There were just so many runs. Nothing to complain about here, really.
- Michael Conforto continues to impress out of the three hole. He was 2-5 tonight with two RBI. He and Cespedes both are OPSing over 1.000 for the season. Amazin.
- Let’s Go Mets! It’s just, like, really fun the be a Mets fan right now.
I was at this game tonight, and Matz’ early struggles fueled my fears about the cool, wet weather affecting them. But he kept them off the board and the batters started walking. And then the third inning happened – something I’ve never seen before, and I was at the 10-run Atlanta game. So many consecutive hits and a grand slam. Almost feel bad that no one will remember how Matz fought through six scoreless innings.
Wow what a great memory for you Mike! Matz seemed to have finally taken control at about 90 pitches, so I’m glad he was left in.
The Mets are a juggernaut – something (such as a force, campaign, or movement) that is extremely large and powerful and cannot be stopped.
Great hitting and shutout pitching from Matz.
Yes Rob, Let’s Go Mets! It’s just, like, really fun to be a Mets fan right now.
The Mets a juggernaut? Why can’t I agree with that?
But anyway, I loved the title to the write-up of the game at the
Giants page of SB Nation:
“Giants pitch six scoreless innings, still lose to Mets.”
