The Mets fell behind big early got some runs back but were unable to complete the comeback, as they fell to the Rockies, 7-4, in Denver Saturday night.
- Logan Verrett had his first bad outing as a SP this year. But he wasn’t as bad as the home plate umpire, who blew a call that played a pivotal role in the game. With the bases loaded and one out, Verrett struck out the 8th placed hitter. But the ump ruled that he fouled off the pitch. Terry Collins came out to argue and was tossed. Verrett ended up giving up a two-run double to the batter he struck out. The pitcher then came up and made what should have been the third out of the inning. Charlie Blackmon then delivered a two-run single to chase Verrett.
- The bright spot of the game was the work of the Mets’ bullpen. After pitching two innings Friday, Hansel Robles got the final out of the third. Then Sean Gilmartin came on and threw two scoreless innings. Jim Henderson, Addison Reed and Antonio Bastardo each threw a scoreless frame, giving the pen 5.1 shutout innings.
- Curtis Granderson and Asdrubal Cabrera went a combined 0-9 and left eight men on base.
- Neil Walker had three hits, including a homer.
- Mets fell to third place with the loss, their third straight setback.
Third Place, a losing road trip and a terrible umpire’s call has made me sick to my stomach – a true gut reaction.
If I let the brain take over and realize that the Phillies are doing it with smoke and mirrors, umpires are human, west coast trips are difficult and this is the Mets first losing series in awhile then my gut begins to settle down.
It would be nice to win today, relax on Monday and be ready for the Nats on Tuesday proving that it isn’t a stomach ache but just a hiccup.
I must say Metsense, quite a number of your recent posts have come with an elevated flair to them! And this one is perfect!
Granderson is batting an atrocious .192/.258/.346 over his last 21 games (and it’s even worse on this road trip) and has a .694 OPS overall, but let’s ignore that and focus on David Wright’s strikeouts…
He turned back the clock last year, but the jig is up for Granny. It’s time to move him down, probably all the way down to 7, maybe even 8 if you want to reward Plawecki for his hot stretch.
Im probably among the minority, but De Aza might be the better player moving forward.
Conforto also struggling like mad too, so of course you’re not going to score many runs when you #1 and #3 hitter are automatic outs.
