The Mets came up short in their quest to sweep the Marlins, falling on the short side of a 1-0 game Sunday afternoon.
- Before the year, a matchup between Matt Harvey and Jose Fernandez is one that you would have circled on your calendar. And while it didn’t have the same buzz leading up to the contest, both pitchers put up great games.
- Fernandez came into the game with a home record even better than Koufax versus the expansion teams. He was a remarkable 22-1 with a 1.59 ERA in Miami. And he lowered his ERA, hurling seven shutout innings with 14 Ks.
- Harvey was coming off his best outing of the year. And he put up another fine outing, allowing 1 ER in 7 IP. He didn’t have the strikeouts, finishing with just three, but he allowed only four baserunners and had good velocity, even in the seventh inning.
- The Mets hit two balls to the warning track in the 9th inning but couldn’t tie the game. Instead they were blanked for the fifth time this year.
Excellent summary, Brian! I love watching Cabrera play SS, and, today, that attempt to get Ichiro at first was amazing! Also it looks like Conforto is coming out of his slump.
You could really see this one coming. I feel bad that Harvey has gotten no run support all year, but at least he appears to be back on track. With all five of our starters now pitching well, we won’t need to score too many runs – but we do need a few. The current lineup doesn’t stand a chance against an ace pitcher.
There was no Replace-Mets magic today but at least there is no more talk of finding a Replace-Met for Harvey.
Brian,
You run a great site.
There was no need for the back-hand swipe at Sandy Koufax.
The criticism of Koufax piling up his record during the expansion era is old. In his time he was simply the best. Those of us old enough to see him pitch were fortunate.
You could have just as easily criticized Fernandez for dominating a team that Metsense has dubbed “Replace-Mets.”
