The Mets fell behind early and a late comeback fell short, as they lost to the Brewers, 5-3, and ended up with a split of the four-game series.

  • Keith Hernandez summed up things pretty well when he said, “Just a lot of bad baseball we’ve seen in this series.” The Mets fielded lousy and Steven Matz did not have his best stuff. That 1-2 combo let the Brewers jump out to a 5-0 lead.
  • Today’s lineup features six guys not in the Opening Day lineup and predictably, the offense struggled. The Milwaukee pitcher retired 17 in a row at one point.
  • Travis d’Arnaud cannot come back quickly enough. For some reason, the Mets continue to give extensive playing time to Kevin Plawecki and attempt to justify it by saying they want his bat in the lineup. Meanwhile, he’s not hitting a lick and every throw to a base bounces. It’s just painful.
  • Erik Goeddel made a successful return to the majors, pitching a scoreless seventh inning.
  • Terry Collins missed this game, as he went to the hospital for precautionary measures. Here’s hoping he’s back in the dugout when the Mets return to action on Tuesday.

10 comments on “Gut Reaction: Brewers 5, Mets 3 (6/12/16)

Here my gut reaction: Boring, uninspired, poorly played baseball. Where do I start:
    – My buddy’s T-Rex impersonation in the first inning that was ruled a double for Braun? Talk about homer scoring: A double on a chopper to third?
    – The most inexcusable play of the day had to be Kelly Johnson not going home on a grounder to third when it was first and third and none out. Instead he holds on third as the Brewers go around the horn and Johnson gets bailed out because Carter can’t field the throw to first. This allows Johnson to score on the next play which was a grounder to second that would have been the third out, but merely was the second out. This is the veteran that we traded for? Does he give a crap? Didn’t like the trade this time, but Alderson didn’t ask me.
    – Two times Matz fielded a bunt up the third base line from the opposing pitcher. Both times there was a runner on third. Both times Matz threw to the wrong base. The first time, he had the runner going home, but just settled for an out. The second time he had two runners at third but just threw it to first to get the batter running, allowing the back runner to scamper back to second. All of these guys scored. That was three runs right there.

Good point. One assumes that the catcher should be directing the pitcher on the play. Either the catcher wasn’t doing his job or the pitcher wasn’t listening. Poor baseball.

I agree Norm. The fundamentals have never been there on the Mets and certainly all this youth cannot help. Another reason why Rivera should be playing more. As Brian said, the Mets keep talking about Plawecki’s bat. What bat are they talking about? Who do they think they’re fooling?

  • Jimmy P

Last I looked, Rivera was hitting .146 and played the day before.

I agree he’s moved up from understudy, but he’s not exactly taken the bull by the horns.

Team is really in danger right now. They need to hang in there.

Last week this was supposedly said by TC

    https://www.sny.tv/mets/news/rene-rivera-will-get-bulk-of-playing-time-at-catcher/182591554

But in the 6 games since, Plawecki and Rivera have started 3 games a piece… classic TC.
I won’t complain just yet because of the DH and day/night games one would expect a starter to get 4 of the 6 games, so a one game difference isn’t that big of a deal, but if Rivera isn’t starting both Tuesday and Wednesday, i’ll be ready to call out TC’s bullshit playing time lies again.

    • Jimmy P

This is so silly. “Playing time lies”? Aren’t you getting a little hysterical here for a guy who is hitting .143?

      One forty three.

It is reasonable to give Plawecki limited opportunities to play for 3 reasons:

      1) The Mets would benefit if they can get anything out of Plawecki, it behooves them to not entirely give up on this player;

      2) Rivera can’t hit . . . at all . . . and the team is desperate for offense;

      3) What choice does TC really have?

Again, let’s look to the Mets farm system that was so barren at the C position that the club had to go out and get a reject from Tampa Bay.

When d’Arnaud comes up, Plawecki goes down — where he belongs — where he belonged at the beginning of the season. Until then, TC is stuck with the guys he’s got.

      That’s on the GM.

Also: This team has been really unlucky with the injuries. It’s a brutal time. The complete collapse of Michael Conforto has not helped. I can’t lay any of this at the feet of Terry Collins.

      • TexasGusCC

Jimmy, you’re taking this thing with Collins way too personally. All Name said was that Collins said one thing but did another.

Do you disagree with Norm above and myself that a more alert catcher could have saved two or three runs?

With catchers, for me offense is secondary. Handling the staff and being field general is paramount. Your point about it being a day game after another day game is plausible, but I think it probably has more to do with Plawecki’s psyche than his “good bat”.

  • Larry Smith

Here’s the state of the Mets in a nutshell. Plawecki is batting .205 with a 574 OPS and is being described as the Mets’ offensive catcher. Yikes.

I had to turn off the game in solidarity with the fellow at Twitter who wrote that if the Mets don’t feel like playing baseball then why should we be bothered watching them?

  • Eraff

This is nothing short of physical collapes, and they are gonna need to decide on “This Year” versus “Next Year”.

The Tradeables: The Starting Pitchers, Conforto, Dilson, Nimmo, Smith, Rosario…… That’s if you want to compete this year

If you want to trade for “futures”: Cespedes, Walker, Cabrera, (The Starting Pitchers), Familia and the 7th/8th inning relievers, Grandy, DeAza, Lagares.

  • Charlie Hangley

I could smell doom when they left ’em loaded in the top of the first.
