The Mets were shut out and lost the opening game of their three-game series to the Pirate tonight at Citi Field, 4-0. The Pirates just continue to give this team fits.
Once again, Jacob deGrom wasn’t at his best yet pitched well enough to win. He needed 105 pitches to get through six innings, while giving up two earned runs and striking out nine. His lone mistake was a two-run homer to Jung Ho Kang in the sixth. It’s been eight games now since deGrom got a W, though he’s pitched more than well enough.
Here was the Mets’ lineup for tonight’s game:
Alejandro De Aza, LF
Asdrubal Cabrera, SS
Curtis Granderson, RF
Yoenis Cespedes, CF
Kelly Johnson, 2B
Wilmer Flores, 3B
James Loney, 1B
Kevin Plawecki, C
It went about as well as you would’ve expected, then. The Mets were held hitless by the young Jameson Taillon for six innings before Granderson got a single in the seventh. Of course, he was immediately erased by a Cespedes double play ball. They collected just three hits and struck out six times. It was not a fun game.
There’s not much more to say, really. Erik Goeddel looked good. Jim Henderson, not so much. Go Mets.
Citizens, your Mayor is working overtime. Please let me handle the panic.
Had great seats at Citi. As usual, I watch the pitchers very closely. I thought deGrom was terrific, save one bad pitch. He and Harvey have gotten no run support all season. As for Taillon, I recall when he was a much ballyhooed prospect a few years ago. I think his progress was slowed by TJ surgery if I’m not mistaken. Anyway, he’s got a Wainwright-esque curveball that makes batter’s knees buckle. Despite the injuries, getting Walker back in the lineup and getting more playong time for Lagares should help a bit. With Thor vs. the struglling Locke tomorrow we ahoukd be able to win. LGM!
Taillon has Great Stuff….and he easily toyed with this lineup. The combination was deadly
That lineup says it all. And honestly, with the injuries, it’s hard to blame anyone. The backups are merely reminding us why they are backups.
The worst part is how boring it all is.
After Last Night I was ready for Dilson at 2nd and “Walker” at 3rd…. they need more talent and more depth. It’s either in-house or it’s needed before the trade deadline. They need to find out/Try Out Now!…. they’re gonna lose contact, even with generally good Starting Pitching!
That said, Taillon shoed the talent that made him a #2 overall Pick…and a #12 Overall Prospect prior to TJ Surgery. He was nasty and he would have silenced many lineups last night—this lineup was a breeze.
