If you like rain and homers, this game was for you! There were three separate rain delays totaling two hours and six homers, five of them by the Mets, who jumped on top early and cruised to a 10-2 win Friday.

  • There were many stars in the game but the best story was Brandon Nimmo, who had two hits, including his first homer in the majors, and three RBIs. Oh, and he also made a nice diving catch in the outfield.
  • Other Mets to homer were Asdrubal Cabrera (2X), Yoenis Cespedes (his 20th of the year) and James Loney. It was another good game for Loney, who also had a single and double, driving in two runs with the latter. He had two chances for the cycle but was unable to hit his second triple of the year.
  • While the return of the HR offense was a welcome sight, perhaps the best news was the performance of Jacob deGrom, who had elite velocity and simply overpowered guys upstairs. He had 7 Ks in 5 IP and picked up his first win since April 30th. A return to 2015 deGrom would be a wonderful thing
  • Seth Lugo made his major league debut, pitched two innings and did not remotely put the eight-run lead in jeopardy.

The smile and energy that Nimmo provided along with his sheer joy of playing the game he loves was priceless. Uplifting to see such enthusiasm.
The crack of the bat and the speed the ball leaves the stadium are amazing on Cespedes homeruns.
Loney has been some great addition.

Agreed on the Nimmo personality factor.

    This team is weird.

Agree on deGrom. He had that electric high fastball going, huge movement.

    Good use of Lugo there.

Great to see Nimmo go deep.

Love the way Loney goes the other way with authority. He’s a quiet player, but a real professional. Glad to see him hit the long ball; it’s been the critical piece that his game always lacked. Just not dangerous enough to be top shelf.

I complained to my boys (17 & 23) yesterday afternoon how these Mets will make you crazy. One win and you are suddenly bursting with hope! Now after last night, it’s like, okay, let’s go take the NL East.

    Let’s Go Mets.

And not noted, another solid outing from
Jerry Blevins, stranding runners after a rain delay when the Cubs still might have made a game of it.

Meanwhile, Matt den Decker still can’t hit his way out of AAA. Nice kid, but.

Great trade at the time, and an absolute steal in retrospect.
