stewiepukeWhere’s Fernando Tatis? Clearly this is 2009 because Jose Reyes is here and everyone keeps getting injured. As if the news weren’t bleak enough with Matt Harvey shut down for the season for shoulder surgery, our best player and best pitcher both exited tonight’s game with injuries. Yoenis Cespedes left with a quad sprain, hopefully nothing too serious, but probably enough to shelve him until after the All-Star break. More alarmingly, Noah Syndergaard exited after throwing a pitch and his last few throws showed diminished velocity. Uh oh. Let’s all cross our fingers and toes that this is just a “needs a cortisone shot” type of thing and not what we all don’t want to say aloud, because that would mean we don’t see Thor again until 2018. Sweet cheese crackers, would that be a nightmare.

In lesser news, we lost to the Nationals. Daniel Murphy thinks he’s Mickey Mantle, especially against his former team. Steven Strasburg is doing what Harvey was supposed to do this year. And none of it matters in the grand scheme of things, because, sadly, it’s quickly starting to look like this is a snake bitten year, just like 2009.

The whole Mets Day was one kick in the gut after another.

It seems like the Mets injuries are a mix of ones you could expect and ones you could not. Wright’s injury-expected. Duda-not. Harvey-not a big surprise. Thor-everyone’s been waiting for the TJ Bug to hit ’em sooner or later. For the Mets sooner always happens before later. d’Arnaud- of course. Cespedes figured to be more likely to hurt himself swinging than in the outfield.
It is very difficult to put so much faith in young power pitchers. In today’s game many of them, maybe even most, don’t hold up.

Four games back, fifth playoff spot, two in front of the 6th team. I’ll take that and fight like hell to keep it. Splitting these last two games is essential. The all star break couldn’t come at a better time.
Strasburg was great last night but they were still only a swing away in the 8th. The Met relief core of Lugo, Blevins and Goedell did a great job of keeping it close. Most teams give up runs when the secondary tier of relievers come into a game. The Met relievers are a good bunch and should be appreciated.
Thank goodness the games are played between the lines and not in a computer. Today we still have a good chance to win, not easy, but possible. Lets Go Mets!

    Mercifully neither injury appears serious

    Very clever lead in.

Obviously the Harvey injury is worrisome long-term. Let’s hope that all Thor and Cespedes need are some rest over the all-star break.
