The Mets won back-to-back games for the first time in over a month with a 5-1 win in the rubber match of the three-game set with the Padres Sunday afternoon at Citi Field. The last time the Mets won two straight was July 6-7. Between July 8 and August 12, the Mets were 10-20.
- Steven Matz went 7.1 innings without allowing a hit. He was removed right after giving up the hit. He finished the day with 8 Ks and 2 BB in a terrific outing and picked up his ninth win of the season. After getting off to a great start, Matz has been unable to record many wins lately. In his previous eight decisions, he was 1-7.
- The HR offense returned for the Mets. Wilmer Flores got the scoring started with a solo HR to LF in the second and Neil Walker followed with a solo blast in the fourth. That was it for the scoring until the 8th inning.
- The Mets’ third run is what some fans have been lusting for. Jose Reyes led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on an error by the catcher and scored on a wild pitch.
- T.J. Rivera drove in his first runs in the majors with a two-run double in the eighth.
- Mets managed just five hits in the game but added seven more baserunners on walks. Ty Kelly notched three free passes while Jay Bruce had two.
- Gabriel Ynoa, a starter in the minors, pitched the ninth inning, his second relief appearance in as many days. He surrendered the only run that the Padres scored, but it was nice to see him make back-to-back appearances and avoid using Jeurys Familia for the same.
The standings tell you there’s a way forward… Cespedes back in days. Back to back hammer starters.
It’s still about getting to the post season Healthy and playing well… Amazingly, still possible
How is Ty Kelly still Here???..starting!!!???
I seriously admire him as a Ballplayer,,,but he’s not a Major Leaguer!!! Isn’t there someone who could provide more Upside??? Is there a risk to Bringing Taijeron and Floating Kelly???…is someone gonna Grab Him??? so?????
I guess he’s Ruggiero “Lite”…. and are we “waiting” on “The Rouge”…????
I’m trying to find a good analogy for saying that Ty Kelly isn’t a Major Leaguer but that Travis Taijeron is.
How about — Zamfir isn’t Rock-n-Roll but Slim Whitman is.
What I’m trying to say is “Next!!!!!”
Kelly’s 600 ops is his topside
I’d rather see Conforto struggling…. Believing he can tap into a higher level that they need if they are to even fantasize about winning
I’d rather see Confirto here… Sucking his way through at bats…. I’d believe there was an upside to his struggle —– an upside they need
Kelly is at a 600 ops…. And that’s as good as it gets
We need Conforto to be a winner. He needs to bring with him a winner’s aura. He also needs a specific spot to play. I can’t see how it would help the team in the near or long term to bring him up with the notion that it is “ok if he struggles a bit”.
They can’t win without the top side of a guy like Conforto…. And that’s why you play him through the pain.
The alternative is Ty Kelly, deAza…. Ty is not a Major League player. De is a replacement level at best.
