The Marlins avoided a four-game sweep by jumping out to a 6-1 lead and hanging on for a 6-4 win Thursday night against the Mets.
- Jacob deGrom kept the ball in the park but otherwise it was not a particularly good outing, as he allowed three runs in five innings. As he left the game after being pinch hit for in the bottom of the inning, the television cameras caught him motioning for the trainer to follow him but no update was available during the game.
- Josh Smoker came on and looked very good in the sixth inning, which got him another frame. Woops. He allowed three straight hits, the final one a three-run homer to Christian Yelich, who was doing his best Chipper Jones imitation in this series. It was the third homer for Yelich in the four games.
- The Mets had a golden opportunity to cut into the lead in the eighth inning. One run was in and the bases were loaded with no outs. But Michael Conforto grounded into a 1-2-3 double play and pinch-hitter Yoenis Cespedes struck out to end the threat.
- Asdrubal Cabrera delivered a pinch-hit two-run homer in the ninth for the game’s final runs.
- Next up is the Nationals, as the Mets hope to get back on the winning track against a team that’s had their number this year.
Another series win ! Keep up the momentum and take two of three from the Nats!
Granderson and Bruce had a good series and hopefully can carry their resurgence through September. Conforto needs to play everyday but in a playoff race he needs to earn it or the other two outfielders have to flounder. There are enough at bats to go around. I hope in 2017 they totally commit to Conforto. He is the future.
Too many injuries. Way too many injuries! How ever this season ends, the team has bucked the odds by having meaningful games in September. So why aren’t the Mets selling out Citi Field like the Phillies used to and the Giants do now? I am curious to see how they do attendance wise this weekend.
Conforto looked good last night. I agree; he is the future.
Interesting stat on number of players used this season, from the NY Post. We were middle (average) of the pack.
2nd base…this may be tough next year.
JDG on the meeting with Ray Ramirez:
“Everything’s fine,” said deGrom, who acknowledged talking to Ramirez, but said it wasn’t about an injury. “I was frustrated with how I pitched. I didn’t feel great out there tonight. I just wanted to talk to Ray. … I just got out of sync out there. There’s nothing wrong. … I can’t throw the ball where I want to right now. I’ve got to figure it out. I think it’s mechanical. Like I said, I feel fine.”
Do the pitchers frequently want to talk with Ramirez? Something seems a bit odd here…
