The Mets evened their series with the Nationals and gained ground on the Cardinals, Marlins and likely the Pirates with a 3-1 win Saturday night at Citi Field.
- All it took for the Mets to beat the Nationals was a hit with RISP by Curtis Granderson and an extra-base hit by James Loney. Granderson had been hitless in his last 22 ABs with RISP and Loney went over a month without hitting something other than a single. Granderson drove in two runs in the third inning with his hit and Loney added the game’s final run with his RBI in the sixth.
- Robert Gsellman allowed nine baserunners in six innings but limited the damage to just one run. He ran his record to 2-1 and lowered his ERA to 2.87 in 15.2 IP for the Mets. Jeurys Familia struck out two in the ninth to pick up his 45th save of the year.
- The Mets used four relievers to close out the game, pretty typical for them. The Nationals used six relievers to pitch three innings, which probably isn’t their M.O. No wonder the game took 3:14.
Only saw two Mets atbats tonight, but one of them was Granny’s single. I almost cracked up. After walking Cespedes, when Granderson came to the plate, Gary Cohen informed the viewing audience that Granderson is hitting .116 with runners in scoring position. When the ball snuck though, Cohen sounded shocked as he said, “Granderson comes through!” I felt the same way.
Loved the highlight of Conforto’s diving catch. I wish the kids get to play on this team, but hopefully it gets resolved during the winter.
*Editor, I capitalized to show the exclamation and emphasis in Cohen’s voice. Please forgive.
Editor’s Note – No
One of the hits last night was on a grooved 0-2 fastball to Zimmerman. Gasellman throws too many fat pitches… And he does it in both hitters and pitchers counts. He had lots of base traffic and got away with lots of bad pitches.
He has decent stuff…. He’s Game…. He’s dancing between rain drops. Hoping he continues to be ready and lucky…. Hoping he’ll pitch even better
Gsellman pitched very, very gutsy and came through. Impressive showing for the circumstances. The raging hot Cabrera set up Granderson’s heroics with a double. Granderson or Cespedes would not have even attempted Conforto’s catch, let alone make it. Smoker has a live arm but needs to cut down on the homeruns. Robles has a similar problem.
A trifecta with the three competitors losing. Only one team and one game behind. Lets keep up the momentum and taken another series. Lets Go Mets!
