This is an old tale
And not a happy one
But full of woe, alas, and pain!
The 2017 Mets, the team that reminds us, daily it seems, that things can always get worse. Wednesday we saw Robert Gsellman, our preseason Rookie of the Year candidate, get clobbered in the first inning on his way to another short outing. We saw Fernando Salas once again give up runs, despite having five days off. We saw the offense once again struggle when a righty was on the mound,
But that was nothing compared to Thursday.
Noah Syndergaard was scratched once again, this time with a dead arm. Matt Harvey didn’t have his good stuff and for kicks decided to see what it would be like to pitch without command, too. Our new third base coach decided to channel Tim Teufel. And Yoenis Cespedes suffered a pulled hamstring, which required two guys to help him off the field. It will be a shock if he doesn’t have to miss considerable time.
So, now the team has lost 10 of its last 11 games and travels to Washington to face the healthy and firing on all cylinders first-place Nationals.
The Harvey scenario sounds like last year. Maybe he needs to skip a start. Let’s call up Rosario. Bench Reyes.
The score could have been 6-6 after 9 innings, if Reyes had thrown home the first time and Bruce hadn’t been waved home by the dope coaching at third base.
Oh well, at least Smoker pitched great, and Bruce, Walker, and even Reyes are swinging their bats pretty well now.
FWIW, Fangraphs still projects the Cardinals as the #1 Wild Card & the Mets a hair ahead of the D-Backs for the 2nd.
I found this random interesting tidbit.
The Mets are 8th in SP ERA and and 6th in RP ERA. You would expect their overall combined rank to be middle of the pack but somehow they are 3rd in overall.
That must means a lot of teams have one component doing really well while the other part is struggling big time.
