The Mets entered play on Sunday looking for the series sweep against the Nationals. Jose Reyes hit a one out triple right down the first base line in the first. Jay Bruce followed with an RBI single through the shift to make it 1-0 in favor of the Mets.

In the bottom half of the first the Nationals proceeded to put a beating on Noah Syndergaard with an RBI single from Ryan Zimmerman followed by a two RBI single from Anthony Rendon and yet another RBI single from Michael Taylor. Followed by another RBI single from pitcher Joe Ross.

Rene Rivera struck back in the top of the 2nd inning with a solo shot. Syndergaard was taken out in the 3rd inning with an arm injury. Jay Bruce followed in the bottom half of the inning with a solo home run as well.
Anthony Rendon hit a solo home run in the bottom half of the 3rd to make the score 6-3.
In the top half of the 4th Matt Reynolds hit a two out single, followed by an RBI double from Sean Gilmartin. Michael Conforto then singled in Gilmartin to make it 6-5.

The Nationals then proceeded to pile it on scoring 4 in the 4th 3 in the 5th and 1 in the 6th. Rendon set the Nats club record with 9 RBI through 6 innings.

The Nats then added 5 in the 7th before the Mets turned to third string catcher Kevin Plawecki, who proceeded to get 3 Nats in a row to stop the bleeding.

Bryce Harper homered of Plawecki in the 9th to make it an even 20 spot for the Nats. Adam Lind then proceeded to hit a 2-run homer to make it 22-5, this game is just sad.

Rendon then hit his third home run of the game to make it an even 10 RBI. Plawecki finally got through the 8th after surrendering 3 home runs in the inning.
Well that might have been the worst Mets game I have personally watched in 30 years. Syndergaard, who should not have started, left with an injury. The team got shellacked for 23 runs and any good morale built from Friday’s and Saturday’s victories is gone.

The Mets will look to pick up the pieces on Monday against Atlanta.

    O M G !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (policy exception requested)

Nobody’s gonna pity them, but they’re 24 games in and their shit is Busted!

This is why Sports is the best of Reality TV…”The thrill of Victory…The Agony of Defeat…”

I’ve been consistently saying this for a while, but i don’t believe Smoker is MLB material.
It’s also been a long hard fall for Salas. After being the 2nd guy in the pen the first 2 weeks, he’s probably last or second to last in line now.
Gilmartin doesn’t do anything but eat up innings, but even still i hope they don’t call up Montero for the sake of having a fresh arm.

On a positive note, the offense actually made things interesting closing the gap from 5-1 to 6-4 before the bullpen just absolutely lost it

    • TexasGusCC

      They got to 6-5.

Can they make all those guys pee in a cup? Come on….

  • MattyMets

i have two concerns following this game and neither has anything to do with the score or momentum. First concern is Syndergaard’s injury. It appears to be a lay strain, which while not as bad as an arm injury, it could still sideline him for a while. With Lugo and Matz still on the DL we really could not afford another starter injury. If Thor is going to miss more than a start or two, we need to go outside the organization for help. Neither Gilmartin or Montero seems capable of winning a game.

My second concern is our lousy bullpen. The only guys who’ve been consistently effective are Blevins and Edgin.

This bullpen is okay, probably above average, but nothing exceptional and not a force. Despite what you might read in some places.

That said, I’ve been pleased and surprised by Edgin, though he’s never pitched a full, effective season. In addition, Robles has been very good.

Salas is an up and down guy who has guts, aggressiveness, fearlessness. I like him. But he’s more of a 6th-7th inning guy than some kind of lockdown type reliever. Love Addison Reed, but last year was a career year. I think he’ll be fine, but unrealistic to think he’d duplicate that performance.

If excellence was the goal, the Mets needed to add one more high-quality arm to the mix.

      But losing Thor, that’s rough.

I didn’t know if they had enough for the WC this year, but the staff gave me hope that it was possible — despite a mediocre offense, a good (not great) bullpen, and horrendous fielding. We shall see. I still think they can win 91 games.

When Biceps Tendonitis morphs to a Lat strain, it may mean that he was compensating while throwing. They need to shut him down fast and hard.

His reaction to the original injury was pure Gorilla Head- being a dumb ass is not as charming when you bust up your shoulder and lose your weapon.

Wow! I didn’t know the football season started…hell, it seemed as if it was just a day ago I thought I saw the NFL draft. 23-5?? First off, I’m a long time Mets fan but this is ridiculous! We’re not even through the 1st month and we’re already a MASH unit and out of the race. I mean lets face it. Every team in our division gets better but not the Mets. We keep hanging our hopes on the miraculous recoveries of David Wright, Lucas Duda, Matz…. It ain’t gonna happen!! Wright and Duda are class acts, no doubt. Granderson is an awesome individual but it’s time to cut them loose. We could have gotten something for Curtis, we should have traded Matz, give David W. a position in the organization but they’re not going to be what they once were. I’m getting tired of Matz always on the DL. I’m getting tired of the Wilpons not going after great players and letting them go to other teams, like…ummm… Daniel Murphy! I’m tired of the Mets signing players that are cheap because they hope they can find the fountain of youth. We lucked out for one year on Cabrera and now?? zzzzzzz. The only thing the Mets got right was signing Jay Bruce…and that was by accident. They thought they could trade him because other teams will need an outfielder. Good idea except there were 100 free agent outfielders to go around, and they thought they’d get a relief pitcher for him. They need 6 relief pitchers! Our pen sucks!!! Why didn’t they just go out and sign one? Oh..I forgot…we need to stay at the bottom of the salary scale, beings we’re a small market team. We play like one! I say clean house! Matz, Granderson, Duda, Cabrera, d’arnaud, Harvey (maybe)…Collins….out!! Bring up the kids and last but not least, I still think the Wilpons should sell the team to someone who’d care about brining in some talent and making us longtime Mets fans happy again.

Winning two of three in Washington was very cool. Now, I hope the Nats tailspin for two weeks following this…

Plawecki was hitting 82 on the gun…

Let’s take inventory of the anti-Nats:
    Cabrera .244 / 90ab
    Walker .195 / 87ab
    Reyes .174 / 86 ab
    Granderson .128 / 86ab
    TDA .226 / 53 ab
    R. Rivera .250 / 36ab
    T. Rivera .200 / 25ab
    Lagares .130 / 23ab
So, how do you field a lineup with this production? And you jeopardize Cespedes’ involvement by not putting him on the DL immediately but risk seeing a longer absence – which is what happened?

    • Eraff

This is another test for Collins and the Clubhouse to stay engaged and competitive… we know this group has that ability. Whether they still have the physical skill to compete is the unknown (Reyes, Cabrera, Grandy…. Walker?…Duda???)

There are no moves and no Saviors… this is 30-50 games of grind and survive. It’s also an opportunity for some guys to prove what they are/can be… Conforto, Flores, Lagares, d’Arnaud, Gsellman, Montero, Gilmartin….. Nimmo, Cheech?

I believe they will hold off on Rosario.

  • NYM6986

Time to bring up Smith and Rosario. This team cannot hit. Let’s give the kids a couple of weeks to see what they can do. What is there to lose by doing so.

  • Jim OMalley

When is the traditional Super Two cut-off? Mid-May or mid-June? I don’t think either get called up before that. That doesn’t help the pitching staff either.

  • Metsense

Five straight games that the Mets have scored five runs or more. They end up 2-3. The pitching isn’t doing the job.
The Duda setback is disheartening. Reyes, Conforto, Bruce and TDA should be at the top of the order.
Syndergaard for any out length of time will be disastrous Gsellman needs to step up tonight.
May 1st and the Mets need to grind it out as if it was August 1st.

    • Jimmy P

They need a winning month. The new goal: get to .500.

      Game 163 or bust!

  • Charlie Hangley

Guys, it’s one game out of 162 and it’s May 1. The older of you will recall that in 1985, on June 11, they lost to Philly 26-7, en route to a 96 win season.

It’s baseball, it happens. A win in Atlanta tonight and 23-5 is forgotten.

Now, the Syndergaard injury, on the other hand…

    • Jimmy P

I think we know how to laugh off one game, Charlie.

It’s harder to laugh off a miserable month.

Yesterday I texted a couple of friends in the morning, essentially saying, “I don’t care about the game, I just want Noah to come out of this okay.”

Reminders of 6/11/85 are no solace.

  • Charlie Hangley

Syndergaard: partially torn right lat muscle. On 10-day DL, no timetable for return.

    And the band plays on…
