The Mets welcomed back the cavalry from the DL and thanks to some late-inning heroics, emerged with a 6-1 win over the Braves in the first game of a double header Saturday afternoon.

  • Yoenis Cespedes returned from the disabled list and delivered a grand slam homer in the top of the ninth to break the game open. He went down and got a pitch and golfed it just barely over the wall. The Braves intentionally walked Michael Conforto to bring Cespedes to the plate and paid the price.
  • Addison Reed recorded five outs for the save. He came on with two on in the eighth, the inning in which the Braves cut the lead in half thanks to a Brandon Phillips homer.
  • Robert Gsellman had really good stuff. He pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the first, thanks to errors on back-to-back plays by Asdrubal Cabrera. But he was in command and even when batters got the ball in the air, they did not do the damage they did earlier in the year.
  • Steven Matz returns from the DL to start G2.

Three well pitched games in a row.!Maybe be will finally turn the corner. Cespedes is a difference maker. Flores is playing really good offensively and lately he is no worse defensively than his infield teammates. It is time to call up Rosario and make a strong push in the next month.

For those that are calling Cabrera a second half player, get on the other teams’ blogs and tell their fans that. In fact, he is a better second half player, but by a slim margin. His RC+ goes from 101 to 108, yippee. His OPS goes from .730 to .764. Better, but not worth having a player that can’t move three steps on a grounder. On another note, Bozo the Manager has put Reyes at SS and batting second in the nightcap. And it’s a wonder why the Mets suck.

Meanwhile in Washington DC, they changed the manager when they had to and kids are excelling at their positions when given chances. If that fossil in the front office had his way, not only would Rosario come up in August but Conforto should have been in Vegas in April. We have two decent youngsters, that’s it, and we can’t make room for them.

Grandy batted against the Lefty…then was defensive switched for Lagares—why not Lagares as as the PH for Grandy?

Flores on 2nd… they could have pinch run Rivera, who defensive switched….and then they would have batted Cabrera for the Pitcher.

I guess I used one more player there…and Hindsight is that TJ got the big knock.

I did not understand the logic there—especially a Lagarees D Sub without getting the platoon advantage of his bat.

    Sleeping Bench?…or do they disagree?

Eraff, the Cubs hired Rick Renteria (who is doing a great job with the other Chicago franchise) to manage the team but when Joe Maddon became a free agent, Theo Epstein understood that leadership must not be taken for granted. When the Dodgers were dissatisfied with Don Mattingly and when the Nationals realized Matt Williams wasn’t the answer, neither was satisfied with contention but rather bettering their odds of success.

On the other hand, the Mets want to keep a harmony that may or may not stand in the way of success. So, we sing koumbayia and que sera, sera.
