Reports have the Mets trading Addison Reed to the Red Sox for three prospects. Use this area to comment on the Reed deal and any other trade or trades that go down today.

RHP prospcts Jamie Callahan (No. 23 on Boston’s Top 30 prospects list according to MLB.com), Gerson Bautista (No. 28), and Stephen Nogosek (No. 18) will be coming to the Mets, reports Alex Speier of the Boston Globe.

Callahan, 23, is 5-2 with a 3.21 ERA and six saves in two stops in the Red Sox’s system. He is currently pitching at Triple-A Pawtucket. Nogosek, a 22-year-old reliever, is 4-4 with a 3.06 ERA and 19 saves in two stops in the Red Sox’s system. He is currently at Salem, the Red Sox’s advanced Class A affiliate in the Carolina League. Bautista, a 23-year-old reliever who also is at Salem, has a 3-2 record, a 5.16 ERA and four saves.

One down, hopefully more to come. Would love to see, at minimum, Cabrera and Granderson also moved.

  • Chris F

3 RHP all in top 30 is a solid get for Reed. It shows he’s been a wonderful Met. I hope he has a great remainder of the season, and we see him back next year.

    • David Groveman

The pitchers all have good strikeout numbers. I feel like they’ll all wind up relievers long turn.

  • Matty Mets

Like most Mets fans I think, I became a fan of Reed. I love his fearless, gunslinger attitude on the mound. He’ll be missed but this trade had to happen and the return is solid.

Hopefully we can stock the farm a little more today as we unload Cabrera and maybe another pending FA.

  • Brian Joura

Hard to believe Reed won’t get a closer’s job somewhere next year. I’ll miss him; he was terrific in his nearly two years with the club.

Checking over the three guys they got, there’s something to like about each of them. I’d say they’re somewhat above lottery tickets and somewhere beneath guys you’d say will definitely play in the majors.

I’d say it’s not as good as the return the Pirates got for Melancon last year when Melancon was also an impending free agent. But Melancon was acquired to be a closer and Reed wasn’t – so I guess that makes sense.

I guess the big question is if the relievers they just acquired are better than what the Mets gave up to get Ramos. I really liked Merandy Gonzalez but Keith Law called his stuff fringy. I’m not big on Cespedes but perhaps a move to a different org is just what he needs.

What’s your opinion on this deal compared to the Clippard deal?

      • Brian Joura

For Clippard, Mets traded a SP prospect who looked good at the time of the deal but who has failed miserably since.

At this point all three of these guys are already relievers. I think it’s likely that one of them will make the majors, which makes the ultimate return better.

But at the time of the deal, Meisner was a rising property as a SP. To me, again at the respective time of the deals, his upside was higher. In a floor versus upside proposition when acquiring prospects, I’ll generally come out in favor of upside.

Joe Vasile, who was a broadcaster for the Salem Red Sox last year, is going to write something later today/tonight about Callahan. It will be interesting to see what he has to say.

  • Jimmy P

I will be disappointed if this is it for today.

It all comes down to the Mets willingness to include money.

There’s a logjam and SA needs to break it up. Can’t keep limping through season like this.

  • Brian Joura

    From David Schoenfield at ESPN:

“So this looks like a deal that will return some help for the Mets — not huge upside, but needed bullpen depth. On the other hand, maybe they get nothing. Baseball America did a study, reviewing every July trade from 2003 to 2012 and found that fewer than 20 percent of prospects traded had productive major league careers (defined as at least two seasons on a major league roster and positive career WAR). So this could also be the last time we hear of these three guys.”

    • Name

This was what i’ve been saying all week. I think if you reduced that list to just rentals, the percentage would be even lower. I would put good money on the Reed trade being part of the “failed” 80%.

Now for clarification, is it 20% of all prospects exchanging hands not having that productive career definition, or 20% of trades having at least 1 prospect who meets that definition?

  • Brian Joura

    From Matt Cerrone at MetsBlog:

“Callahan is the short-term get here, since he can help this season and next. I was told by a team dealing with Boston that they prefered to pay Reed’s salary, but give up mid-level arms; as opposed to having the Mets pay Reed’s salary and giving up less players, but an elite arm.”

    • Jimmy P

Yes, that was my take. That a team like Boston was not going to be motivated by a few extra million. OTOH, a team like the Brewers or many others might be. Essentially you are buying a better prospect.

      But it takes two.

  • Jimmy P

Let’s imagine that the reports are true, that the Brewers have “interest” in Curtis Granderson.

Curtis is still owed probably $6 million for this season. A ballpark guess.

Well, maybe the Brewers don’t have that kind of interest. They need the price to go down. Maybe they’d pay $3 million. Maybe they’d pay $1.5 million plus a prospect. Maybe they want Mets to pay all of it, but they’ll throw in X. That kind of thing.

My feeling is Mets need to clear some room. Bring up Smith and let Bruce and Conforto play.

My guess is that the same is also true with Cabrera. The level of interest does not match the cost. Which, yes, says nothing good about the players and their contracts. The horrible contract is why a guy like Neil Walker is unmoveable.

Too bad Mets couldn’t send Rene Rivera to Cubs. Good time to give KP one more shot at sticking.

I think of Sandy dithering for over a year on Ike Davis in hopes of getting some return. When really the team needs to move forward, discard and evaluate.

    • Brian Joura

Sometimes the best pitch to hit is the 0-0 fastball right down the middle. It’s pretty clear that Alderson should have traded Davis for Joyce and Gee for Escobar. Metsense certainly advocated for the former the first time he heard it and I thought he should have pulled the trigger on the latter when I first heard it.

But those were offseason deals and it’s not hard to imagine the deadline ones being a different beast.

Regardless, there’s no reason that Asdrubal Cabrera’s presence on the roster should have anything to do with promoting and playing Rosario. It was one thing to showcase Cabrera at both 2B and 3B before the deadline. But there’s no reason he should play ahead of Rosario now. If he can get something for Cabrera – great. But neither he nor Reyes should play SS ahead of Rosario the rest of the year.

      • Jimmy P

I think Mets need to zero in on 3B: Walker or Cabrera or a big acquisition.

Need to see those guys play the position and evaluate correctly.

    • Paul Schwartz

While I don’t disagree with the need (wish) to move Granderson, Cabrera and Walker, the truth is all contracts can go bad at some point.
For these three the contract looks bad for the last 2 months of this year but at the very least all that payroll comes off the books in October. But this negates the value all 3 players have had .
      1. Granderson — would I have preferred him to be a more consistent producer — of course but there’s little doubt we don’t get to the World Series without him in 2015. He was our MVP over the course of that full year. And last year his hot second half was a major reason in our getting the wild card. And he’s been a great teammate and great guy to root for. And he’s clearly gone next year so I think his contract is at least a B+.
2.Cabrera — Exactly who plays shortstop last year if he didn’t? (and play it damn well too) It’s clear that this year is not as good but frankly since his ill-advised temper tantrum, he’s been a great utility player and is hitting well over .300 for the last month. And his Homer against the Phillies last September was probably the biggest hit of the year. We’re not picking up the third year and we most likely wouldn’t have gotten him last year without the second guaranteed year. So again this contract is a B+
      3. Walker — The trickiest of the 3. First take out of the discussion Daniel Murphy. He was gone and he wasn’t coming back (Frankly he goofed by not taking the qualifying offer and probably cost himself $10-$15 million over the three years of his very club friendly Nats contract). Then who plays second? Walker did a terrific job last year until he got hurt and while the Q offer made him an overpaid player this year — it’s become clear that Dilson Herrera wasn’t the answer at 2nd base (and Jay Bruce is pretty good as it turns out). BTW Herrera is hitting .264 in AAA and has been on the DL three times since the beginning of June. Walker is a solid pro and provided us with a professional infielder when healthy (and there was no injury history before he got here). Grade: C+ (B when healthy)

The final analysis is that our low priced and high value starting pitching let us down big time this year with injuries and inefffectiveness. If they even pitched as well as they did last year as a group, we’re in the wild card hunt now and if they pitched like they did in 2015 (I’m speaking of Noah, Harvey and Matz) we might be challenging for first in the division.

And where did all the people who wanted to us re-sign Bartolo go? As it turned out, his two contracts with us while both seemingly huge risks were terrific as was the decision not to offer him one this year.

      Hindsight as usual is 20-20.

Paul makes some great points, as does Jimmy P. Rosario and Smith should be called up now. Walker should get a shot at third. Flores should take over at second. Cabrera should be put on waivers and if we still can’t move him I think we might have to eat his salary and release him. I like him but he’s just in the way right now. I hope they also put Granderson on waivers as much as we all love him, he’s also in the way.

      • Jimmy P

Yeah, good points, but as of today, July 31, and looking at what’s valuable to Mets moving forward.

Curtis has been solid, a good contract.

Walker, not his fault, but a disastrous blunder by organization to fail to scout and evaluate Daniel Murphy. Forget the QO, team needed to keep him. Would have rewritten history of organization. A consistent hitter who showed very real signs of progress.

Cabrera was terrific last season, and has looked old and brittle this year. Not a terrible contract by any means. But he’s in the way.

        • Chris F

Thats ridiculous. The Mets failed to scout Murphy. They saw him for 7 years average through his 20s. The idea he was going to be what he turned into in his 30s is not evident anywhere in his history. Meanwhile, Walker was a better player pretty much every year by comparison. Using the benefit of rose colored glasses of hindsight is not something you can smack Alderson with IMO. Furthermore, there is no way you can just translate what Murph has done as a Nat and say he would have done the same if he stayed in NY. Different team, different players, very different line up.

  • Steevy

Always good to get arms but I was hoping for a third baseman prospect .

    • MattyMets

Since the Blue Jays are clearly blowing up their team it couldn’t hurt to see what the asking price is for Donaldson.

      • MattyMets

The dominos are all falling now.

  • Chris F

Overall a disappointing day for Alderson. It was easy to unload Reed and Duda. The shame is that all this other relatively meaningless veteran talent is a waste for the next 2 months and now just baggage that Collins has to play to pretend the Mets are “in this”.

Is it that folks dont value what the Mets have…or just dont like dealing with Alderson? In either case, it does not have great optics for this FO or the team in general.

As for Rosario and Smith. There is no need to bring them up now. Collins will never bench Walker and Cabrera and Reyes. He has to play Gump and Reynolds too. We wont see either Rosario or Smith until rosters expand, unless they make some waiver deal this month.

Meanwhile in LA…holy crap…Id be shocked of they dont walk through the playoffs. Big day over there!

    • Name

I’m not sure what you were expecting. The one who everyone thought was the best trade chip barely brought back anyone of note

With Reed and Duda traded, the outlook for 2018 and beyond hasn’t changed one iota. We got 4 maybe-ish dime a dozen relievers who no one is going to pencil in as likely contributor to any future Met roster. Even if they do make it to the bigs, odds are they’ll provide production that the Mets could have gotten just from internal promotions.

      • Chris F

Was hoping to clear roster spots to demand promotions, really, nothing else.

        • Name

The guy who is really blocking the player you want to see hasn’t even been mentioned once in the last few months.

          • Chris F

            Im curious who that is…

I was wrong, there is no one blocking him. Rosario to debut in Colorado tomorrow.

            Woo hoo!

  • Brian Joura

Keith Law says that Bautista is Rule 5 eligible after this year.

  • Metsense

Addison – Your aim was true. (The last time I can use it from the Chatter)
Sandy brought three darts to throw and maybe one will hit the dart board but probably not a bulls-eye. He got the best he could.
Duda also bought in another reliever. Our bullpen is a mess. Some good second tier relievers are needed going forward. Drew Smith is another dart.
AJ Ramos was thinking out of the box and was quite an impressive move. It addressed a potential hole in 2018 while paying dividends in 2017. It also removed trade competition for Reed. Smart.
Rosario getting promoted was the proper thing to do but he has to tell TC that he has to start.
Sandy had a good trade deadline.

  • Eraff

There are trades made after the “deadline”.

Doesn’t Cabrera have a team option for 2018… he remains a live option for utility and depth

Granny is not blocking play days for anyone…. I wouldnt be surprised fo see him outrighted to allow Him to find himself a pennant race…. that would be classy

I’d like to see Rosario debut with a professional 2baseman–Walker

    • Jimmy P

I think Cabrera’s health & general gimpiness makes him problematic as an everyday player in 2018. I’d prefer to see the Mets move on rather than rinse & repeat. Feel the same way about Jose Reyes. Team needs to shed some baggage.

Granny not blocking anyone, exactly, except maybe Smith if the idea is to shift Bruce to 1B. Also, what does the organization get out of keeping Granderson on the field at this point? I don’t see the value. How far away is Nimmo & his collapsed lung at this point? I’ve lost track.

On that same note, I’d like to see Plawecki one last time, see if he can get any traction. Or if all the AAA performance is a mirage.

I feel that sooner is better than later.

The problem with judging deals is what’s the baseline? And what would be a “bad” deal in this case?

One way would be to look at all the potential offers available. Clearly if some team is offering their #1 prospect and you take another team’s offer of #30, it’s bad, but as fans we have no idea what other teams were offering.
Another way is to look at comps, preferably in the same year and with the same type of pedigree, but sometimes it’s not easy to find those comps and then you have to adjust for the situation and environment

With rentals, it seems like most fans are happy with getting anything and thus any deal is a “win”. Would fans have been less happy if the deal had just been 2 of the 3 pitchers? 1 of the 3 pitchers? Probably not.
      Also, how would you compare getting 3 prospects ranked 20,25,30 vs getting 2 ranked 15,30? Or if you’re comparing 2 on 2, a 10,15 vs a 8,20?

      • TexasGusCC

Name, you’re right. We don’t know. I thought the Pirates did better with Watson, but people are responding the Mets guys have more upside…

On MLBTR a Red Sox fan bitched about having to give up Callahan. While we don’t know how good our talent evaluators are, knowing Sandy Alderson waited until the last day to accept a deal means nothing better was offered.

        • Name

“While we don’t know how good our talent evaluators are, knowing Sandy Alderson waited until the last day to accept a deal means nothing better was offered.”

Not necessarily. Sandy was originally offered Joyce for Ike Davis, and he held out and ended up getting a lottery pick instead.
Some team may have made a “better” offer earlier, but we may never find out if no one leaks the info.

          • TexasGusCC

I’m nodding, nodding because I remember. We hope that wasn’t the case.

But seeing the return for JD Martinez, a great hitter, tells me that:
            1. a Michael Fulmer for two months of Cespedes will never happen again (I think Danbrowski bluffed Alderson because Danbrowski couldn’t even offer him a QO per Cespedes’ contract and was going to lose him for nothing).
            2. it was a buyer’s market so the offers all seem less than encouraging.

  • Chris F

I think getting a haul of 3 top 30 prospects is excellent turn around for Reed. Ive been a big Reed fan, and sad to see him go, but his talent was totally wasted on this year’s team. We have the capacity to re-sign him in FA (though it looks like weve gone for Ramos to replace Reed). As it stands we get pitching depth that may or may not have an impact, which is better than keeping Reed and getting zero when he signs elsewhere. Im not sure you call it a “win”, but I call it a good deal.
