The Mets lost for the ninth time in their last 11 games, as they were edged by the Diamondbacks, 3-2, Thursday afternoon in Citi Field. But the game was secondary to an injury suffered by Michael Conforto.
Swinging on a 2-0 count in the fifth inning, Conforto missed and went down in a heap, clutching his upper arm. He was removed and later it was disclosed he had a dislocated shoulder. The Mets had two on and no outs in the inning but didn’t score and lost one of their best players. It couldn’t have been much worse.
This one actually started out well before the wheels came off. Rafael Montero struck out five of the first 10 batters he faced and Yoenis Cespedes hit a monster blast into the second deck to give the Mets a 1-0 lead.
But Montero allowed too many consecutive hits in both the fifth and sixth innings – even if none were particularly well struck – and his defense did not help him any. Arizona scored twice in the fifth, with one of those runs coming because 3B Wilmer Flores ran the wrong way on a bunt attempt. The visitors added another run in the sixth, chasing Montero in the process.
The Mets’ pen had a good day. Josh Smoker, Chasen Bradford and Erik Goeddel combined for 3.2 scoreless innings and seven strikeouts.
The Mets had runners on in each of the last three innings, including bases loaded in the seventh and runners on the corners in the ninth, but could manage just one run.
Mets in serious contention for #4 overall draft pick, possibly #3.
Do that for a few years in a row and the rebuild will be on its way.
Conforto’s injury is bizzaro! Hyper Flexible people(not sure that’s Conforto) can experience lots of dislocations, but usually not Capsule Tears, which seems to be the case here.
The Shoulder is very complex…hoping he finds a full and sturdy recovery
The kids are scrappy. However, leaders need to lead. And a clutch hit here and there wouldn’t hurt… just saying.
That Conforto injury is the last straw: We need to get a priest over there!
