If you missed this game, you may think the score is a typo. It’s not. The Mets lost by three touchdowns in the most lopsided loss in the 57-year history of the franchise.
Following a very active trade deadline in which the Nationals opted not to sell off and instead go for it this year, despite sitting 5.5 games out of first place and the second wild card spot heading into today’s games. Well, this must have fired up the team because they came out swinging against the Mets and our pitchers responded by leaving fat pitches right over the heart of the plate all night. This combination resulted in 25 Nationals runs on 26 hits, eight walks and five home runs. Yikes.
Steven Matz started and was awful. The lefty couldn’t get out of the first inning, surrendering seven earned runs on eight hits. He was relieved first by Jacob Rhame, who allowed six runs on seven hits in two innings. Next up was Tim Peterson who coughed up three more runs. Tyler Bashlor took the hill next and gave up three runs of his own. It was like a Bruce Lee movie where one guy after another steps up and gets his ass whooped.
One guess who the biggest contributor was in the Nationals’ hit parade? That’s right, Daniel Murphy was 3 for 4 with two home runs and six RBI. Will we ever be able to live down that mistake?
If you stuck around to the bitter end of this disastrous game, you actually got rewarded. Jeff McNeil hit his first Major League home run and Austin Jackson slugged his first as a Met. But the big news, was Jose Reyes got to pitch the last inning. After using six pitchers in this blowout, Mickey Callaway thought he’d better save a few arms for tomorrow afternoon when Noah Syndergaard makes his first start in several weeks. Reyes threw a mix of 78-84 mph fastballs and slow, loopy curve balls, one of which hit Ryan Zimmerman who jokingly made like he was going to charge the mound. The cameras panned to the Mets dugout where Jacob deGrom was laughing uncontrollably. Reyes let up two home runs and six runs in all. If you thought his .494 OPS was bad, you should check out his ERA – 54.00.
All joking aside, this team ought to be ashamed of itself.
A few notes:
- Wilmer Flores took himself out of the game in the first inning, complaining of dehydration and nausea. Hopefully he didn’t catch what Noah Syndergaard had. New Yankee J.A. Happ now also has hand, foot and mouth disease.
- The non-waiver trade deadline passed and the Mets opted not to make any further moves.
- The 25 runs the Mets allowed was their second most ever.
The Nats are not back this was a mediocre pitcher having a ugly day of regression. Steven Matz has outperformed his fip by around a run coming into this start well after this miserable shitstain performance Matz’s numbers are closer to his true talent and real performance. Matz doesn’t really fool hitters as his chase rate is pitiful, and really his stuff and command hasn’t come close to returning to his stuff from 2015-2015-2016, you know the last time he was good as he’s been replacement level this year. I don’t get why the Mets like him so much as his only redeeming quality is that he’s much better than Vargas and they really should have looked at moving him over Wheeeler.
Not real sure what Rhame and Peterson are doing in the majors neither guy is close to a major leaguer and I hope they are replaced by Wahl and Bautista soon. Oh and Jose Reyes the pitcher >>>> Jose Reyes the position by player.
Jose the pitcher gave up 6 and got 3 outs >>>>>>>>>> Matz gave up 7 and got 2 outs.
A disgraceful effort by a gutless putrid team. Nothing funny about it. No anger or emotion from those fools. This is one of the worst Mets teams I have seen and I’ve been a fan since 1967. They flat out suck and there is no hope on the horizon.
Wow! What can you say? The city of New York should demand the Mess take their letters off their uniforms…or be forced to turn in their uniforms. The owners should be forced to sell. How in the hell could they possibly be proud of what they’ve done? This is by far the biggest laughing stock in major league sports! Maybe they could show a recording of this game to a group of manic depressed people. They’d probably laugh harder than ever before. This is the worst game I’ve ever seen the Mess play. Good thing I didn’t waste money on the MLB package. Can’t wait for football season.
What an embarrassment. They should be ashamed if themselves.
Not one deal. They could have tried to pickup a piece for next year. Look at all of the other teams who tried to make themselves better.
Word is, Callaway pressured the three headed monster not to trade any of the starters.
This game was not funny. It is the kind of a game that after the game in the locker room, somebody should have thrown a bunch of stuff around in anger.
So, if they don’t trade their starters, how in the H are they going to rebuild their offense if they don’t have a ton of money to spend on C, 1B, CF, and a new bullpen?
I know what it is, Frazier, Bruce and Cespedes and a bunch of castoffs.
Grrrrrr
I sort of can’t believe this! I go to Greece for a few weeks to get away and on the first day here I see this? And you guys injured my buddy too, as soon as I left? Do we know if the nausea got progressively worse as the game went on?
Seriously however, Matt, what was the context of JDG’s laughter? As while he has earned much favoritism, I’d like to know if he still cares.
He took himself out of the game in the first or second after botching a couple plays. He’s seriously bad at 1B.
I tuned in when it was only 3-0. What plays did he botch? I’m reading that before he took himself out there were 4 singles, a double and a strikeout.
Hoo boy,it’s going to be a helluva ride this last two months! Gotta think they’re going to have the worst record in the league. Bright side, there will be a new manager and a new GM. Dark side, there won’t be enough new players. Sad.
