Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. Jacob deGrom pitched masterfully but came out on the short end of the stick, as the Braves emerged with a 2-1 win Friday night.
At this point, no one would blame deGrom if he walked into the clubhouse and told his teammates that they were to hang their heads in shame and were not allowed to look up until after he showered and left the stadium.
Tonight’s effort included nine strikeouts in eight innings pitched. He retired the last 12 batters he faced. Oh, and he also drove in the Mets’ only run.
The Mets managed just five baserunners all night, one of them being deGrom. Conforto, Frazier, Jackson, Reyes and Mesoraco all failed to reach base. At least four of them will be in the lineup on Saturday. Woo-hoo.
Here’s a guy who some say should be a Cy Young candidate and he’s 5-7! This is not a team that can be a contender next year. This team might lose 100 games and might have the worst record in the league. This is not a team that can be a contender next year.
or for years to come.
And this offense got held to 2 hits by a journeyman starter and 3 rookie relievers.
