Mets and Reds square off in the rubber game this afternoon at 12:10. In the first game, the Mets scored six runs and won. In the second game, the Reds scored six and came out on top. Who scores six today? One thing the Mets have going for them is Jacob deGrom on the hill. As you know, deGrom is pitching masterfully this year. As you probably know, deGrom has a long history of being tremendous in day games.

In 44 afternoon games, deGrom is 19-10 with a 1.99 ERA and a 1.011 WHIP. This year, he’s 2-2 with a 1.93 ERA. While is daytime ERA is higher than his overall mark this year, that’s not the pattern it’s been throughout his career. In 2018, deGrom has been outstanding whenever he pitches. The one area where you can slightly ding him is the wherever part. See, he’s pitched two games in retractable roof stadiums and has a 5.25 ERA in 12 IP. In 20 games and 134.1 IP in open air stadiums, he’s got a 1.54 ERA.

Bobby Wahl…I realize it’s a Short Stat Line and a brief Eye Test, but this guy is absolutely humping up 94/95 mph GetMeOvers. Good news is low walks, but I don’t see the lightening arm or very much in the way of stuff.

Short View is Mneh. Maybe he’s a little tired or tight?

    • TexasGusCC

Don’t forget, he wasn’t on the A’s top 30 for a reason. But on the plus side, the Mess saved almost $3.5MM.

I enjoyed the tweet from Howard Eskin, where he reports that Werth blames RAJ for not keeping the Phillies team together. Of all the things to hammer RAJ about, that has to be one of the dumber ones. The 2014 team still had Ruiz, Howard, Utley, Rollins, Hamels and Lee and would have had Halladay if he hadn’t gotten injured.

I’m sorry that you were no better than 8th on the pecking order of that 2008 WS team, Werth, but RAJ did keep that team together.

      • TexasGusCC

Yup. Ironically, RAJ’s downfall in Philly was his keeping the band together too long. They all got old and collective production fell without the infusion of youth.

        • Chris F

They didnt call him “Ruin Tomorrow, Jr” for nothing.

          Werth is a dope.

I sat in my seat as soon as the rains came down. I, like the rest of the crowd stayed around watching an extremely listless team perform up to expectations.

This afternoon’s game should be interesting in only can the (fatigued and tired) hitters can motivate themselves for deGrom?

Without researching, the Mets seem to be terrible on weekday day games, so I hope Jake brings his hitting shoes.

Short sample on Wahl, and nothing against the kid, but another AAAA arm for Familia is a complete embarrassment and just another on the long list of indictments against the lying ownership.

While Irma is very unwise to give up on 22 year olds, Mr. Rosario’s performance is very troubling. Yes, he should play daily for the rest of the year, despite a sub .280 OBP and league worst SS defense, but barring a dramatic uptick in performance, they should plant for him to start the season at Syracuse, and spend a good. Hunk of time there. And, if Gimenez gets there, he may need to find another position.

    • Name

I went ahead and checked your weekday theory – you are right

They won their first 3 weekday day games (Opening day, 4/4, 4/5)
      Then they proceeded to lose their next 8 (4/26, 5/3, 5/9, 5/16, 5/28, 6/6, 6/13, 6/21)
They won the first game of a double header on 7/9 which started at 4:05 (i consider that day but officially that’s a night game). Then they beat the Padres on 7/25 but lost again on 8/1.

So that’s 5-9 if you count the 4:05 game and 4-9 if you don’t.

  • Eraff

I might prefer that they provide Rosario with a day off instead of a reassignment.

Until recently, he has not looked defeated—recently, he’s given away several ab’s that are just troubling. I believe he still profiles as a SS, and it’s a good time to absorb his growing pains.

    • Chris F

word on the street is he is headed for center field

  • Madman

Lots of disappointments this year but Rosario might be the biggest. He was a top five prospect and visions of Correa,Lindor and Seaver came to our minds. Not only has he not hit ( and our beloved Mets now have him hitting lead Off) but his fielding has been poor not gold glove caliber like we were led to believe.

For the life of me, I can’t understand why Blevins was used to close the game on Monday night. Here’s a guy with zero shot to be on the club next year and we have a slew of young guys who need to be evaluated. In a 6-4 game, it would have been nice to see Rhame, Smith or Bashlor in that spot.
Rosario is a horror show. He has brought nothing (hitting, power, defense, game-feel) to the table. Based upon expectations heading into Spring Training, he is easily the biggest disappointment of 2018. Not even close.

  • TexasGusCC

While many Mets fans seem to want to skin Rosario alive, MLB players say that the biggest jump in production is from their first full year to the second, as they get used to the speed of the game and use the off season to make some corrections. This is Rosario’s first full year and he’s a pretty smart kid. Let’s give him some time.

  • Chris F

I think the smart money moves him to 2B, we get some stop gap like Reyes to play SS for a year, and get Giminez to play SS. SS is clearly too fast of a position for Rosario. He would be better at 2B, much better is my guess.

    • TexasGusCC

Since he has the arm, what about 3B?

      • Chris F

I actually think he does not have the arm. The game is to fast, the throw too far.

  • Pete

Just a thought outside of this topic. The Orioles will probably be eliminated from the division by this weekend. Is this the earliest a team has been eliminated from their division? Though I would imagine the early years of the Mets might top this one.

    • TexasGusCC

I don’t have a specific answer, but found something pretty surprising while finding something similar to your requested answer.

Guess the other side is more interesting. Teams playing the furthest from their projected runs scored and runs against (absolute value again)
      1) Royals (!)
      2) Braves
      3) Red Sox
      4) Brewers
      5) Mets!

      ‪@DanHirsch‬
The Orioles are 45.5 games behind in the AL East

Most GB through 113 games in divisional era:
      2018 BAL 45.5
      1979 TOR 41.5
      1998 TBD 39.5
      1993 COL 38.0
      2006 KCR 37.5
      1995 MIN 37.0

  • Metsense

Flores is not the future. Smith doesn’t deserve the promotion but he is the next player forthe position .Smith will swim or sink.

    • Pete

Since Cespedes will not be ready for the start of the 2019 season and Bruce’s defense seems to diminishing why not have Bruce start the season at 1st base? Leave Lagares, Comforto and Nimmo in the OF. Why wait to see if Smith is the answer?

    • Chris F

      Like the Salem witch trial!

      Hope you are good Metsense!

    • TexasGusCC

Hi Metsense. I vote for sink. Extremely unimpressed mentally. Yes, he may mature, but by then he’s a free agent.

I believe AR can play his position and blossom as a hitter. He needs to be an even more instant offensive success to play CF…of course, youre all planning for Gimenez being an instant star when he gets here in a year or two.

You cannot have Young Players and Nice Things!!!…you don;t deserve them.

  • Eraff

This would be a perfect time to play D Smith…Flores is absolutely not the answer, and Alonzo should get a little time at AAA. The problem is that Smith has absolutely spit the bit….a 721 ops at AAA says he’s either physically or mentally not ready. He

Heidi Watney looks better in a dress than you do, so I like her game recaps better

As for the Tech and other possibilities, this could work for some stuff…direct posts of short conversations—how about an interview with Texas Gus or Matty????

    • Chris F

You need to check into the podcast Eraff. Brian does some excellent interviews!

  • Eraff

Well…you can see that I suggested some great interviews…I will check the Pods

and to say that HW looks better in a dress— a very classy wave and compliment to both BJoura and Heidi
