The Mets’ young bullpen arms held the Marlins in check long enough to give the Mets a chance, but the offense never came through. Instead after Bobby Wahl, Paul Sewald, and Tyler Bashlor combined to put four zeros on the board, Jacob Rhame entered the game and needed just seven pitches to give the game away in the 11th inning.
Corey Oswalt made the start and was again terrific. While the box score indicates three earned runs, two of them wouldn’t have scored had Amed Rosario not cost the Mets a routine double play with a mental mistake in the fourth inning. Prior to that, the Mets jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a Todd Frazier bases-clearing double. J.T. Realmuto tied it up in the fifth inning with an RBI single. Then, both teams trotted out hard-throwing young relievers that held the opposing lineup scoreless until the 11th inning.
Wilmer Flores contributed two doubles and Michael Conforto got on base four times.
The Mets go for the series win tomorrow with Noah Syndergaard on the hill.
In the Friday open thread, you mentioned that Callaway said he wanted to give higher leverage outings to the young relievers. There’s absolutely no reason to give a higher leverage spot to Jacob Rhame. He has no MLB quality offspeed pitch, which is why he’s got a 7.97 ERA. He should be in the minors with Gerson Bautista.
Eric Hanhold is back pitching. I’d rather see him up facing MLB batters than Rhame.
Yes, Mr. Rhame needs a lot of work, and not at the major league level. In years prior, the Mets had little bullpen depth and very few hard throwers. Now they have little bullpen depth with very many hard throwers. Velocity is certainly important, but it is called pitching, and not throwing, for a reason.
Rhame is a thrower who does not belong in the majors. If Bashlor can learn to control his breaking pitches a little better he could be a keeper.
Wahl is the guy who excites me. His delivery reminds me of Kenley Jansen. I’d love to see him learn a cutter.
September 15? Starting at 3B,David Wright, starting at shortstop,Jose Reyes! Then they both announce their retirements! Wow!
Reyes won’t retire. The easy money is too good. Expecting him to like apply for a job to pass his time? Plus, while Wright has an injury risk and possible paralysis, Reyes has no such worries.
Frasier is a professional and leader. Rosario has to learn to focus. David Wright is an inspiration. He inspires me.
Oswalt should get a chance and stay in the rotation duration of the season. The Mets should have a 5 men only. Vargas can fill in and a long relief and maybe he will straighten out but Oswalt is the future.
Felix Hernandez can move to the BP but not Vargas?
Frazier is a professional who is batting .217.
The automatic 3-0 take for Nimmo Bothered me alot…a guy who has been half way for a month needed to be turned loose on a get me over fastball
I called the Wright-Reyes re-union 6-8 weeks ago… I broke that story!!! 😉
Oswalt- the velocity is disappointing,,,the Pitching is not! He moves and locates and changes speed. Throws strikes. I’m not sure I see the out pitch—Change up??? He’s competitive, and has a better chance of Pitching with an 92 mph FB than throwing GetMeOvers at 95
Nimmo doesn’t look like a guy that will ever swing 3-0 in his career.
Harvey can move to BP but not Vargas?
Sonny Gray can move to the BP but not Vargas?
