MLB allowed a 26th man for Sunday’s Little League Classic so the Mets called up Dominic Smith. He got into the game as a pinch-hitter and delivered an RBI, opposite field double. After the game he was sent down because it’s important that both Jack Reinheimer and Jose Reyes are on the roster at the same time.
Smith hasn’t gotten much of an opportunity this year and what little he has received – he hasn’t impressed at all. In 75 sporadic PA, he has a .575 OPS. And to make matters even worse, he’s been absolutely dreadful in home games. Here’s his home/road split:
H – .065/.121/.065 in 33 PA
R – .293/.310/.561 in 41 PA
The hits are really falling in when he’s on the road – .393 BABIP – but he also has 8 XBH in those 42 PA. By contrast, he’s 2-31 with 14 Ks in Citi Field, with both of those hits being singles.
By one of those happy coincidences, Wilmer Flores has the same exact number of PA right now (362) as he did a season ago. Here are the slash lines:
17 – .271/.307/.488
18 – .271/.323/.440
Coppinger: “If being surrounded by children and young Mets who produce don’t convince Jeff Wilpon and his army of general managers that children are our future, and not Jose Bautista playing first base and Jose Reyes playing anywhere, then nothing will.”

There’s some kind of power struggle going on with the Mets, as the Fred Coupon wants to recreate the 1955 Dodgers, so he wants to find a GM that is more “traditional” and less analytical. Jeff Coupon however, wants a younger GM that is more analytical.
The result: a Mess. Fly Dominic Smith to Vegas, then six hours later tell him to come back because we’re DL-ing Brandon Nimmo. Talk about how you can’t make this stuff up!! I wonder if the NFL would allow this crap to keep going on.
Jackson,Bautista, and a renewed Reyes are playing a big roll in the Mets improved play of late.
Smith is back now because 10 day DL for a bruised finger for Nimmo…..
