Robinson Cano has a .658 OPS and is being outplayed by Adeiny Hechavarria.
Edwin Diaz has a 3.22 ERA, a 1.299 WHIP and has allowed 5 HR in 22.1 IP
And Jarred Kelenic has been promoted to Hi-A after putting up a .955 OPS in 215 PA.
Metsense has advocated that when he returns from the IL that Cano be platooned with Todd Frazier, with J.D. Davis alternating between LF and 3B.
Before everyone went on the IL, my Sunday article was going to call for Jeff McNeil to move back to 2B and to use Davis and Dominic Smith as a platoon in LF. Now, who knows when McNeil and Brandon Nimmo are going to return.
And to make it worse, Cano will be the first one back. He certainly won’t lose his job completely and he won’t be platooned, either. He’ll be playing 2B and batting third. And he’ll hold both of those slots game after game after game. All in a futile attempt to justify a trade that never should have been made.
And It’s going to get worse. Next years payroll sits at 127 million and that’s before arbitration hearings. No payroll flexibility and an albatross contract that’s going to weigh down this team for the foreseeable future. Make a trade? What do the Mets have that any team wants?
