The Mets used an eighth-inning comeback to snap a seven-game losing streak, as they salvaged the final game against the Braves, 8-5, Sunday night at Citi Field.
Todd Frazier homered to lead off the eighth inning, which cut the deficit to a single run. The Mets proceeded to load the bases and with two outs, Jeff McNeil blooped a two-run single to give the Mets the lead. Pete Alonso followed with a two-run double.
While it was nice to see a comeback by the Mets against another team’s bullpen, the fans still had to sweat out an appearance by Edwin Diaz, who had allowed 9 ER in his last 5.1 IP. And to make matters worse, the Braves had the top of the order coming to bat.
But Diaz set down the Braves in order to give the Mets their 10th win in the cursed month of June.
I’ve lived through many losing seasons of the Mets.
This is different.
I am not enjoying the Robinson Cano “era” Mets.
Just as the hard nose enthusiasm of Alonso & McNeil are enjoyable to watch, even in losses,
The Mickey Callaway saga, the Cano indifference, the Callaway (or Van Wagenen?) pandering as well as the excessive celebration of sub mediocracy are not entertaining.
I have to root for losses to have hope for change?
Good win last night. Shows the potential we have with our bats and the pen. Doesn’t change that we need to be sellers now to rebuild, but there is a good core of players on this team to build on. Since there are no trades after July for post season rosters let’s get out front of other teams selling off.
I think selling now, rather than last minute, is wise. Get some bidding from contenders and let intensify increase.
RGot reaction : finally!!!
The Mets have one of the best pitcher in the league, the best hitter average wise in the league and one of the best home run hitter in the league. So, how come they are nine games under 500?
I do not like the Callaway era, I do not like the indifference of Cano and I certainly do not like the brashness and inexperience of BVW. We are stuck with the ownership but everything else can change. The Wilpons should make some hard decisions and clear out the present management and swallow the salary of the cancer that is ruining this team. I realize that is not going to happen but as a loyal fan iI feel it should happen.
Metsense!
Getting rid of BVW before he dies more ego driven damage and Callaway before he does any more pandering would be a great start.
I’d love a no nonsense independent manager who makes a line up from productivity.
Next, move some vets while we can sell high.
We have some young players to build around.
I think that we are all feeling the fatigue of losing. 2019 is a replica of 2018. The game last night was a refreshing feeling of why we keep coming back. What is scary though, is that we are closer to the Marlins than the Nats.
We have some great building blocks. But, we have some serious needs. Bullpens are really flaky, one year great, the next year, awful. Nobody thought our bullpen would be this bad.
It goes to depth. We need depth in the pitching staff and we need depth in the minor leagues. We also need a true center fielder and a good short stop. Our defense is not good.
So, we have to start somewhere and that means realizing that we are going nowhere. Wheeler has to go. It also means that we might have to suck it up and swallow the pill that Syndergaard has to go as well. But even with Wheeler going, with no depth, who is the replacement?
Maybe somehow we could catch fire and play .500 ball for the rest of the year.
The Mets should undoubtedly be sellers, but when to sell depends on what they can get in return. Besides the obvious Wheeler and Frazier, and maybe Vargas, the Mets will likely need to sell Conforto and/or Syndergaard for an impactful return. That is, MLB ready prospects focused on pitching, CF, and C. Good luck!
The big problem is that for 2020 they have $70 million dunk in Cespedes, Cano, Lowrie, and Familia. Yes, maybe some insurance offset, but this group realistically could collectively deliver zero war. That makes it near impossible to compete. On top of that, the Braves will have money to spend. Yikes!
Nice to see a win. Time and again the same few guys come through in the clutch. Even though Diaz got the save, he was wild. Something is off mechanically with him.
The best thing for this team would be to unload Ramos and Lagares. Even if it means packaging them or eating some salary. I think the for sale sign needs to go up, but with an eye on 2020, not a full-blown tear down rebuild. As several have pointed out, we do have some nice foundation pieces in place.
who becomes available?? Were are no 4 years since the WS and have virtually zero to show….every year its “this is the year” with hopeful rising stars and veteran stars, and here we are <80 wins. Its frankly empty to say 2020 with no plan, or just dumping Lagares and Ramos. No on wants them, and neither would get you a single thing.
This living in the middle, the "rebuilding for it" mentality is the absolute epitome of disaster in my opinion.
Look at the fixed contracts. Ces, Ramos, Lowrie, Familia, Cano, all completely dead weight and a huge part of next seasons commitments. Smith cant play a position, there is no CF, catching quite frankly stinks, and there is no pen. At the best you hope for something better from Wheeler, Syndergaard, and Vargas, but SP is no lock.
What does a plan for 90 wins in the BL East where the Braves are much better than you think? Only the Mets and Marlins are under .500
