I don’t mind that the Mets are taking the view of “meet our price or find another partner”
It does mean that the Mets might find themselves looking at a losing season and no great return for anyone they have.
Giving Wheeler a QO and having him leave the team isn’t the end of the world.
TJ
All 4 decisions should be based on the return. That said, Wheeler is the only one of the group that the Mets should feel any pressure to trade. Keeping him gives them a better shot at a long shot run to a WC spot, but it also risks having him walk for nothing. Given their finances and 2020 payroll commitments, I don’t see them risking his acceptance of an $18 mil QO.
holmer
Garrett seem to have a pretty high upside and would be a great acquisition if the Mets are “in it” this year. Because of his high upside the Mets would have to surrender even more of their assets, which, considering the Mets are still a very long shot to make the playoffs in 2019, would be a bad idea in lieu of an increasingly bereft pipeline.
holmer
Additionally, why would the Reds be open to trading a Garrett when they just acquired Bauer, seemingly thinking they’re in it for this year?

Thor to the Astros for their top outfielder and pitcher
Diaz to Tampa Bay or Minnesota.
Wheeler to the Yankees for Clint Frazier.
And just for kicks, Cespedes,D.Smith and ? to Arizona for Greinke straight up with New York taking on all of Greinke’s salary. (replaces Cespedes dead money) Just trying to move dead money from our payroll
Astro Trade: Kyle Tucker isn’t a CF which leaves the Mets with yet another corner outfielder and their pitching prospects aren’t great. Also Syndergaard is of the table.
Yankee Trade: Let’s take a DH who strikes out a ton for a pitcher who lots of teams want. If you don’t get Garcia from the Yankees, don’t do them favors.
Arizona is also not making that trade.
Chris F
Syndergaard been removed from trade list.
I think its a big mistake not to trade Wheeler provided the return looks good. I clearly see the team different from ownership and BVW. I would trade anyone but deGrom and Alonso, possibly McNeil. Its my contention that saying you cant rebuild in NY and performing like you cant rebuild in NY are wildly different concepts. The Mets have a long-term record that looks like rebuilding despite saying year after year they are “win now”, and so make preposterous trades that cripple the pipeline and leave us with holes that cannot be staffed by promotion, like at C and CF and 3B.
Chris F
I forgot to add to complete my thought.
Win now is a completely empty notion when ownership does not invest the $ to get there in either top FA acquisitions or extensions. One cannot win now and pass on the best FA or fail to anchor critical players, while at the same time trade pipeline pieces for so-so at best vets (the list is endless here, but lets just use the utter waste of Cano as the most recent example), and call that “win now”.
A bunch of empty words.
TexasGusCC
Chris, you mentioned how ownership needs to invest its $$$ to have a winning team. So, what happens to small market teams: Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Minnesota? MLB needs to redo its league to be more like the NFL/NBA where all teams have a chance and not like the European Soccer Leagues where the bigger city gets all the stars and the smaller “club teams”, just play to make a few bucks, not drawing fans unless the big team pays a visit and not signing big names that will drain the coffers
I’d trade Frazier for half a cup of beans. I know he’s had a good year but I’d rather he not be in the lineup to give younger players a shot.
Mike Walczak
I would trade Frazier, just to give JD Davis a chance to play third for the rest of the year.
TexasGusCC
I agree with Mike, David and Chris, but I would make Syndergaard available if the proper piece is brought back. Buying teams nowadays think they should dictate terms because they feel their prospects are hot stuff, but prospects aren’t sure things and teams that miss out on playoffs to hold their prospects cost their team lots of money in playoff revenue. Cashman and the Steinbrenners may not care about the revenue (but Cashman’s faithful will be pissed if he costs the team a World Series opportunity again with his pinching ways) but Minnesota has a good chance at it and should take the leap to improve their pitching staff. In my opinion, if their GM doesn’t step up, that team has the most opportunity to lose.
100% but the “Right” piece was not offered and didn’t seem likely.
TexasGusCC
You’re right David, as most GMs will not make big trades and look bad, or add money to their paeyroll for top prospects. Call it the “Broadie effect”. LOL
TexasGusCC
I just saw that Houston got Martin Maldonado for Tony Kemp. Short term gain for the Astros, long term gain for the Cubs. Teams are going to be comfortable with patchwork players, so trades like this are perfect for GMs.
Metsense
Diaz – yes becaue he is down trending
Wheeler – for fair value
Syndergaard – no
Stroman – no
Frazier – no because I won’t get anything and he is valuable to the Mets than a non prospect
Right now, the Nationals are doing the best job with making deals at the deadline. It seems that none of the big starters (Ray, Wheeler or Bum) are sure to be moved at all.
The Nationals discount relievers are no match for the Braves who nabbed both Shane Greene and Mark Melancon
Mike Walczak
56 minutes to go. Tick Tock Tick Tock
Mike Walczak
Down to 14 minutes. Will Wheeler go to the Rays or Astros ?
If it is right at the deadline, it may take a little while to announce.
TexasGusCC
Not a peep out of the big three in the trade market, Yankees, Astros, Dodgers, or the big three pitchers, Bumgrarner, Wheeler, or Ray… Interesting… I can only imagine the terseness of the conversations…
Seems like Wheelz and MadBum are staying put. I cant believe how little regard teams have for playoff money.
Bob P
Astros just got Greinke.
TexasGusCC
Good job Houston.
TexasGusCC
After two straight years of doing nothing to help his team, Cashman looks like one big baby. Hold onto your prospects Brian, good luck getting to Round 2…
With Sanchez and Greinke joining the Astros the Yankees can’t be pleased.
TexasGusCC
The newspapers are going to fry Cashman, and well deserved. Last year his prospects were too good for deGrom. This year they are too good for Wheeler or anyone else.

The look of “win now” is certainly ugly in Flushing.
I cant wait to hear how the recent play is like we added 5 all-stars by doing nothing.

Brodie May have Yo secretly rehabbing and preparing to be that “big acquisition” for the stretch run. lol.

Good one!!!!!!

In all seriousness, I am disappointed that they could not get a legit high level prospect for Wheeler, but at the same time I am glad that they didn’t deal him for a low return. Regardless of how they finish, it will be an interesting offseason.
TexasGusCC
Zack Wheeler: “No bites Broadie?”
Broadie Van Wagenen: “Nope. We were asking for a backup AA catcher but teams were scared off by the injury history and inconsistent pitching.”
ZW: “Really Broadie? Not even a minor league backup catcher?”
BVW: “Nope. Spoke to all 29 teams these last two days. I’m worrying about you this off season Zack. But, we love you. We’ll offer this shiny 4 year $50MM contract that will give you peace of mind while you show those guys what a mistake it was to turn you down. What do you say?”
ZW: “Where do I sign?”
Chris F
try 3/30 Gus. Every team knows the Mets are cornered with payroll and not giving up the irrational extra prime talent im sure they are asking for. As a result, the Mets get nothing at all to help out ahead and will not extend a QO just on the chance Wheeler takes it at 18M$. Add stroman contract and arbs, they are already leveraged out..and with no more room to make adds.
MattyMets
Biggest surprise to me is that the Yanks, Sawx and Dodgers all stood pat. Yankees desperately need a starter, Sawx a closer and Dodgers could use a setup man. All three have money and prospects to spare. Head scratcher. Astros meanwhile just punched their ticket for the WS.
It seems that the Mets are looking at Amir Garret. My guess is that they might trade Edwin Diaz and/or Zack Wheeler.
Noah Syndergaard is completely off the table from what I see.
I don’t mind that the Mets are taking the view of “meet our price or find another partner”

Apparently it has something to do with a large-scale brawl he was in recently.
Amir Garrett looks like a beast and is having a great season. But who do the Reds need that we have? Not sending them Wheeler.

Wheeler should go if he nets us a good return. If not, hold for this season and attempt to extend and/or offer a QO.
MLBTR reports Thor is off the market as nobody was willing to meet team’s demands. So sad, too bad.
Stroman could be a nice longterm piece for NY if he’ll sign a reasonable extension.

The “belief” is that the Mets will retain Diaz, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
Several teams have shown interest in Diaz of late, but the Mets wouldn’t exactly be selling him when his value’s at its zenith.
Nats get Daniel Hudson from Blue Jays.
Looking like Houston is narrowing in on deal for Wheeler
Also it appears Diaz is no longer on market.
