The Braves jumped on top early and held on for a 5-3 win Tuesday night in Atlanta in the opening game of a three-game set.
Zack Wheeler entered the game with a 15.1 scoreless inning streak but allowed two runs in the first and another in the second. His final line saw 12 hits and 5 ER in 5 IP.
The Mets had their chances in this game. But they left nine runners on base and had another thrown out at the plate.
Juan Lagares had a four-hit game and four relievers combined for three scoreless innings.
And that’s why the Braves are way out in front in the division. It would be great if Lagares is finally starting to hit and can be more than a late inning defensive replacement. Let’s take game 2 and then have a shot at a series win.
Will definitely be interesting to see how the team responds against a first place team and now with at least a minor injury for McNeil to contend with. They packed a lot of mojo in the bags leaving NY, now is the time to use it.
“Gut reaction: don’t panic! The McNeil injury was unfortunate and let’s face it you can’t replace the best for average batter. But we do have defense and pitching and that should keep us close in most games. The group that has the minus 700 OPS have to execute small ball and continue their defensive play. Reports indicate it was a minor strain so maybe in 2 weeks he’ll be back. The Mets have to split this road trip and tread water. The Mets are in position to make the playoffs as long as they don’t collapse.
Wheeler pitched a clunker last night but the bullpen was exceptional and that was a good sign. Maybe Lagares will get one of his rare batting streaks and soften the burden. Don’t get discouraged and whatever you do ….. don’t panic. LFGM
