Just for the record, let’s state all of the players unavailable for the Mets right now:
Noah Syndergaard – 60-day IL, expected back mid-June
Carlos Carrasco – 60-day IL, earliest available late May
Seth Lugo – 60-day IL, earliest available late May
Luis Guillorme – IL, eligible to return but who knows?
Brandon Nimmo – IL, eligible to return but had setback during rehab stint
J.D. Davis – IL, expected to start rehab stint soon
Jacob deGrom – IL, expected to return end of week
Albert Almora – IL, return unknown
Michael Conforto – IL, return unknown
Jeff McNeil – IL, return unknown
Taijuan Walker – removed from start last night after 3 IP due to left side tightness
Kevin Pillar – Hit in face with 94 mph fastball
And there’s also Jose Martinez, who had a chance to make the club out of Spring Training and who certainly would have gotten the call to the majors now, sidelined. And top prospect Matthew Allan out with TJ surgery.
Arguably our 4 best starters, our best reliever, 4 starting position players and 3 key reserves. All I can do is shake my head when I look at that list. I hope Pillar can bounce back from that, not so much for the team, but for his career (and Webb as well).
Pillar was seeing the ball, had consistently gotten goods swings almost every at bat. Hope he returns with a vengeance.
Down to two starters, neither is lights out. Peterson can get on a roll if he can avoid early inning troubles. Clearly his stuff get people out.
Stroman is a huge unknown at this point. He can be dominant but one gets the feeling he is spiraling downward. He should be good for six solid innings every outing… great stuff with great command most often. He might be a shade temperamental, and therefore less than mentally prepared for a full season of pitching… the jury is still out. He can earn a lot of respect in the next few weeks…
Peterson has made 16 starts for the Mets. In Stroman’s last 16 starts for the Mets, he has two games better than Peterson’s best. He also doesn’t have a game as bad as Peterson’s outing this year against the Phillies. And in the middle of those two extremes, Stroman’s been better, too.
I’m not sure why Peterson “can get on a roll,” while Stroman is “a huge unknown,” and is “spiraling downward.”
I’d much rather have Stroman start a must-win game than Peterson.
Reminds me when Jon Matlack got drilled by a line drive by Marty Perez of the Braves and fractured his skull. Hope Pillar is ok and doesnt suffer any long term effects.
And yet they continue to find ways to win. Good makeup on this team – resilient, professional, etc. Good pitching and good defense will help overcome a lot and the Mets have been getting both regularly. Reinforcements on the way – need to stay strong through the next 7-10 games. Does the Thomas Szapucki era start tonight? How about Yamamoto? Who’s looking forward to seeing Brandon Drury or Wilfredo Tovar with the game winner tonight? Maybe it’s time to bring up Mauricio.
PS.
Pete Crow Armstrong out with a jammed right shoulder as well, and I read somewhere this morning that he might need surgery too. Was off to a great start.
Allen,Armstrong no ones safe!
Hmmm, wondering if you intentionally left out Dellin Betances.
First I laughed. Then I sighed.
Guess he should have been on the list but hasn’t he all but retired now? He needs to pitch in at least 50 games for his 2022 option to kick in and there’s no way that’s happening now.
Mets starting to find an identity… the Bench Mob is really a thing! Nido coming up huge… really putting some life into McCann, I would think. Taking two games from the Braves and one can’t find any fault with Rojas… does he start Nido a third game?
Tomorrow Khalil Lee will put a ball in play. Dom is the most experienced outfielder out there! Gotta love Peraza!
and Dellin Betances too. Didn’t we have Mallex Smith?
