Jacob deGrom returned from the IL and got a no-decision, as the Mets beat the Rockies, 3-1, and tied their series at one game apiece Tuesday night at Citi Field.

deGrom was given an early lead when the Mets scored in the bottom of the first but he gave it right back, allowing a solo homer to Ryan McMahon in the second inning to tie the game. But that’s the only run he would allow in five innings, a span where he walked none and struck out nine.

Tomas Nido delivered the game’s final runs with a two-run homer in the sixth inning, which made a winner out of Miguel Castro, who went two innings for the first time as a Met. He went 1.2 IP back in April in a game where he was credited with a blown save. Trevor May and Edwin Diaz each finished with a scoreless inning, with Diaz picking up three strikeouts and his eighth save.

Nido has become a one man force on offense

Gut Reaction: nearly flawless pitching, “stealing” the first run and a decisive homerun by Nido secured the win and allowed the Mets to remain a first place.
Nido has stepped up. Good pitching has allowed them to be competitive in spite of a offensive struggles.

This season is quickly becoming “Survivor.” I’m actually enjoying that all these scrubs are getting the chance to contribute to the story; I just wish they were a teensy bit more capable.
I mean, Maybin looks truly incapable of hitting the ball, and Khalil Lee needs serious help at the plate. He’ll walk into one pretty soon, and we will all rejoice, but there’s 6 pretty easy outs.

Still, the real problem is Lindor and Dom. Does it turn out that Cleveland unloaded a fading player wrapped up in a superstar gift paper? Oh, how we wish Stevie Cohen had resisted signing that contract when he was over the barrel. Cleveland gave up little and got two young, talented player… a coup.

And Dom? I wondered, and even speculated, that his two aborted seasons of success were inconclusive. Is Dom going to shake off whatever ails him and start hitting the ball hard? My previous solution was trading Dom and JD for Chapman… that is no longer close to possible.

Mets have to scrape along and hope they get some ML players back in time to make a run. Many pennants were won in half a season or less.
