After blowing two leads late against the Pirates in the previous six games, it was only fair that the Mets scored two runs in the ninth inning Sunday to salvage the final game of the series, with a 7-6 win.

Michael Conforto delivered the game-winning hit with a two-run homer, which drove in Dominic Smith. It was the third hit of the game for Smith, who finished with two singles and a double.

Earlier in the game Travis Blankenhorn delivered a pinch-hit 3-run homer that cut the deficit to 6-4.

The Mets fell behind, 6-0, early as Taijuan Walker couldn’t even finish the first inning. After frequent bad outings here recently, the bullpen delivered 8.2 scoreless innings. It was a great outing for the pen. It’s just disappointing that two days after having four days off, the pen is already in bad shape.

The pen is not only in bad shape, but it is in disarray. I mean, whom can you trust for an important inning. Is Diaz broke? Is Lugo shaken? Trevor May still may not. Castro is an enigma. Familia is, well, Familia. It ill take a therapist to sort this bunch out.

This was such a key game because the Mets were already over the edge but managed to grab onto the windowsill and dangle from the skyscraper… then they climbed back through the window… notably without Rojas… did his ridiculous tirade ignite the team, embarrass the team, or point to his ineptitude in getting his team ready for the second half? DO we need to hire Gauss!

Terrific win after horrific loss…just another example of the craziness of baseball.

Rolling into Cincy with Eickhoff and Stock as starters, after the pen was taxed for 8 2/3 yesterday. J D Davis may be a legit option as this point. I hope the offense brought their hitting shoes to the Queen city…
