After two hard-fought games that didn’t go their way, the Mets rolled over and got swept, losing to the Dodgers by 10 runs on Sunday Night Baseball.
Carlos Carrasco gave up six runs in two innings. Yennsy Diaz, pitching in his third straight day, gave up three runs in his inning of work. Geoff Hartlieb turned in his third rotten outing as a Met in three appearances, although his ERA as a Met went down as he only allowed 3 ER in 2 IP. And the fine pitching night finished with two position players. Another instance of Luis Guillorme being injured hurt.
And if the pitching wasn’t enough to make you lose your lunch, the offense went 0-12 with RISP.
Michael Conforto filled up the stat line with two hits, a walk, two runs scored and an RBI
We have to be realistic. Our team, even with Lindor and Baez, have a hard time matching up with the Dodgers. If you go on a position by position comparison and compare pitching, the Dodgers are just a superior team.
I love the Mets, but this version of the Mets is not a top tier team. Sure, we have had injury problems, etc…, but I think we have to look at the reality of what our players are.
This team just cannot score runs. Every time I watch a game, they can get on base, but noone seems to be able to get the runs home. Yes, here I write about my emotional responses nd eye tests, but that is who I am. Been a fan for over 50 years and have seen it all. I love all of the analysis that you guys write, but my love of the game is different. That is just how I enjoy it.
I think the FO has to do some serious self evaluation of the team this off season. I love that Nimmo and Oneill get on base, but where are the extra base hits when they are up ? Same for Dom. I just dont see the doubles to drive in runs. I see ground outs, pop ups and fly balls. I dont see great base running and I see Rojas giving up outs by having pitchers bunt. Look what happened when Jake Reed go to swing away. Did you see the speed that he has ? Wow, faster than most of the team!
Time to look at Pete. He is the only real slugger. But he has huge holes in his game. He strikes out way too much and has terrible management of the strike zone. Oh Alonso is up, lets throw him an outside and low slider. Look at Muncy’s plate discipline. It is outstanding and when he swings, he kills it.
We get Baez on a short team lease, the Dodgers get Scherzer and Turner. I would give up a lot to get Trea Turner.
So, what do we do? We need outfielders. Conforto will be gone. (dont really want him) and Smith needs to go. Need guys that can play defense and drive runs in by hitting doubles at the cavernous Citi Field. If our field is not built for power hitters, then get players who can drive in runs in other ways.
So, this brings me to my next point, which most fans would object to. It may be a good idea to trade Alonso and get a young pitcher and a young outfielder.
I also hope that the Mets do not sign free agent Baez. Wrong guy for the the team. I would sign Bryant because he is extremely versatile and can play first if Alonso goes plus OF.
I could go on here for an hour, but I will stop. Ha ha ha – This game last night was really painful to watch. I turned it on in the second inning and they were already down 3-0.
My last comment, get rid of Rojas. Let him ride out the year, but he needs to go.
Thanks guys for all of the awesome writing you do here at Mets360.
I must be losing my mind. I wrote o’Neill rather than McNeill. Ayyyyye
Put JD back in LF, where I felt he played ok. Trade Dom (valuable).
Get a real 2B (Villar?), trade McNeil (valuable).
Get a real 3B… Storey, Byant?? Baty?
Get a stud RF free agent Bryant??
