In the end, the curse of the primetime Fox game was just too much.
The Mets fell behind, 5-0, yet rallied to take a 7-5 lead. But Trevor May allowed three runs in the eighth inning and the Mets lost another one-run game, this one an 8-7 setback to the Yankees Saturday night.
May gave up a leadoff single and then Aaron Judge hit his second homer of the game to forge a 7-7 tie. After another hit, Aaron Loup came on to relieve May. Another single and then the go-ahead run scored on a throwing error by Javier Baez trying to complete the inning-ending double play. It wasn’t a smooth handle of the beginning part of the play, as Francisco Lindor had trouble getting it to Baez right away. A good throw might have still gotten the out, but Baez’ throw was way over Pete Alonso’s head.
The Mets had some chances in the final two innings but neither of the two-out rallies was successful. Back-to-back walks brought up Alonso in the eighth and he hit one that went a long way. Unfortunately, it was to the biggest part of the park and fell a few feet short of going out.
In the ninth inning, J.D. Davis hit a one-out, pinch-hit double. He advanced to third when Kevin Pillar struck out and the ball got away from the catcher. It took a moment for Pillar to recognize the ball was live and that was the difference in him being safe at first on the wild pitch. James McCann, who already had a triple and a homer in the game, popped to right for the final out.
