Francisco Lindor hit three home runs to power the Mets to a 7-6 win over the Yankees. It snapped a streak of five-straight, one-run losses and gave the Mets both a series win and year-long win in the Subway Series.
On Lindor’s second homer, he ran around the bases and seemed to mock the Yankees for their whistling antics the night before. Both benches emptied but nothing more came from that. At least until Giancarlo Stanton tied the game with a homer the next time the Yankees came to bat. Stanton responded with one of the slower home run trots you’ll ever see.
But Lindor answered back with his third homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the Mets back on top.
Edwin Diaz put two runners on base in the ninth inning, bringing up Stanton with two outs. But unlike Lindor, Stanton couldn’t seize the moment, as he popped up to Lindor to end the game.
Take the W and series from the Crankees. That feels good if nothing else. Fun to watch the Phillies melt like a stick of butter sitting on a NYC sidewalk in July.
Our only hope is the Braves’ upcoming 11 game trip out west, but the boys in Flushing need to get hot. A 13 game winning streak like the Yankees would sure help.
If this doesn’t kick start this team, nothing will. With 18 games left, if they can go 14-4, 10 games over might sneak them in. One game playoff with Dodgers would be sweet… Degrom on the hill, Syndegaard in the pen!
Still dreaming.
You don’t see them catching the Braves at 14-4 with the Braves going to Cali for 11 games?
If Stanton hadn’t acted like a baby following his homeruns, this wouldn’t be as enjoyable.
Lindor moved up a few notches in my book. Yes, the 3 HR were great, especially after the ruckus, but it is about time the Mets showed a little feistiness. The Yankees whistling from the bench during pitches is totally candy ass. I am not one for gloating and showboating, but to me Lindor, who is all giggles on the field, he showed some combative spirit. It has been a long time since I’ve seen that from those wearing blue and orange. No time to rest now, they need to take it to the Cards and then there needs to be some unfinished payback for the Phillies this weekend.
I see the Braves holding their own on the west coast and not losing a five- game lead. Now, if the Mets can go 16-2, more likely.
Biggest problem for the Mets is the super easy schedule for the Reds… they play the Pirates many more times… easiest schedule in the majors while Padres have the hardest… I think they are toast.
It’s still all about winning. The rest usually takes care of itself. But if the Braves and Reds play decent baseball for the next three weeks, the Mets are done regardless.
Gut Reaction : It was a satisfying win in an unsatisfying season. Lindor’s three homeruns were exhilarating. This season made me forget that Lindor is a power hitter that has three seasons of 32+ homeruns and .505+ SLG.
What to make of Carlos Carrasco? No one ever talks about him.
Everyone used to talk extensively about Matz first inning woes – he had a 7.28 ERA and 6.29 ERA in 2018 and 2019 respectively, but here is Carrasco with a 15.00 ERA in the first inning and no one seems to bat an eyelash.
It was a nice win and who doesn’t love to beat the Yankees! Finally seeing what Lindor is capable of and the kind of player we thought we were getting. Despite their record, the Yankees are not a very good team. The time is right to take back the back page of the NYPost.
